Former UFC two-time champion Daniel Cormier has made a bold claim. Cormier says that if he were in his prime, he would feed into the current UFC light heavyweight division, as there are currently no wrestlers in that weight class.
In MMA, strikers have fought high-level wrestlers, and Cormier believes that imbalance would work in his favor. The former two-time NJCAA champion stated that if he were in his prime today, he would dominate today’s light heavyweight division, defeat opponents with his wrestling and regain the title with ease. At a recent meeting with Alien Films he said:
“If I was at my peak right now at light heavyweight, there are no wrestlers. I would just enjoy everyone. There are no wrestlers at light heavyweight.”
Daniel Cormier was scheduled to fight Alex Pereira
Daniel Cormier also added this during the same interview that after looking at the current UFC light heavyweight landscape, he would face current and two-time champion Alex Pereira. ‘DC’ is keen to take on the Brazilian due to the latter’s popularity, which would bring in tons of revenue. He added:
“I would probably fight Pereira because he’s the biggest star and as a champion you want to make the most money. When I was fighting, I was top five, Jones, Ryan Bader, Phil Davis, Rashad Evans – there were so many wrestlers.”
Check out Daniel Cormier’s comments on the state of the current UFC light heavyweight division:
The UFC’s light heavyweight division currently has a shortage of elite wrestlers, as Daniel Cormier pointed out. Most of today’s top contenders, including Magomed Ankalaev, Carlos Ulberg, Jamahal Hill, and Khalil Rountree Jr., among others, rely primarily on striking, preferring to stand and punch rather than engage in close combat, which would give ‘DC’ an edge if he were to fight them.
On paper, Cormier and “Poatan” would make for an interesting stylistic battle. However, fans have witnessed a wrestler with Cormier’s pressure and clinching control being able to successfully counter Pereira’s superior striking, which was done by Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313.
