Dan Burn injury deepens Newcastle’s defender crisis after Sunday

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn will miss weeks of action after suffering an injury in Sunday’s 1-0 derby defeat to Sunderland.

It was a day to forget for Eddie Howe and Newcastle this weekend.

Nick Woltemade’s own goal gave Sunderland victory at the Stadium of Light, with Newcastle not managing to register a shot on target until well into the second half.

Magpie legend Alan Shearer slammed Newcastle due to their lackluster display.

And despite a 3-0 FA Cup win in 2024, it is now ten Premier League games without a win against Sunderland.

The result leaves Newcastle in twelfth place, four points behind their newly promoted arch-rivals.

And to make matters worse, defender Dan Burn became the latest casualty on a mounting list of injuries.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Hoe confirms Dan Burn injury

33-year-old defender Burn left the field early after a horrific collision with Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele.

Burn was later admitted to hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties, with Eddie Howe confirming the news.

“I think he went to the hospital,” Howe said.

“He had trouble breathing at halftime. I think it’s a rib problem.”

Multiple reports indicate Burn suffered a broken rib and possible punctured lung, with an expected recovery time of at least several weeks.

If these reports are true, he could miss a large portion of games due to Newcastle’s busy schedule.

He will certainly be missing from Wednesday’s EFL Cup match against Fulham, as well as the big Premier League games with Chelsea and Manchester United.

Newcastle next take on Burnley, Crystal Palace and Leeds before an FA Cup third round tie against Bournemouth on January 10.

With no confirmed return date given, Burn hopes to be fit by then.

But if he doesn’t, he also risks missing the Champions League matches against PSV and Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle injury news as defensive crisis deepens

More worrying for Newcastle fans, Eddie Howe’s injury leaves him with just four fit senior defenders.

A back four of Lewis Hall, Fabian Schar, Malick Thiaw and Tino Livramento – who finished the match against Sunderland – is now the only combination available without calling on academy players.

Burn will be joined in the treatment room by Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Emil Krafth, none of whom are expected in time for Wednesday’s cup match.

Trippier picked up a hamstring problem in training and has not featured since Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford on November 9.

Emil Kraft, meanwhile, suffered a knee injury while on international duty with Sweden.

Eddie Howe - Dan Burn

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has just four senior defenders fit this week.

Discussing the pair, Eddie Howe said last week: ‘I don’t think they’ll be back anytime soon.

At least in terms of the coming matches. We hope to get them back by Christmas.”

It is thought that both are eyeing Boxing Day’s meeting with Manchester United in Newcastle as a possible return date.

However, Eddie Howe hopes for a faster recovery about Sven Botman.

The Dutch defender has received injections to solve a back problem that has kept him out of action in recent matches.

Speaking ahead of last weekend’s win against Burnley, Howe said: “I think so [Botman] had an injection. We hope this will bring about his return quite soon.

“But now I think there’s a period of time before his shot works, which I think is about a week, and then we’ll see how he goes.”

It is expected that Botman will therefore be available for this weekend’s match against Chelsea.

That match starts on Saturday at 12.30pm at St. James’ Park.
