Daily Faceoff projects Maple Leafs’ Ben Danford to make Team Canada’s World Juniors team

We have entered December and that means the World Junior Championships are just around the corner.

Team Canada is expected to announce its roster in the coming days as it holds a 10-day training camp in Niagara Falls from December 12 to 22. Daily Faceoff prospect expert Steven Ellis mentioned top Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Ben Danford in his final selection projection last weekwhich would be a huge achievement for the 2024 first round pick.

Ellis wrote that Danford “can shut down just about anyone,” and we agree with the assessment. Danford was always expected to be a stay-at-home defenseman, with a mandate to work on his offensive game during his final two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League.

Brantford leads the OHL with a record of 19-1-4-1, while boasting several NHL prospects, including Jake O’Brien (Seattle Kraken) Jett Luchanko (Philadelphia Flyers) Adam Benak (Minnesota Wild) Marek Vanacker (Chicago Blackhawks) Adam Jiricek (St. Louis Blues) and fellow Maple Leafs prospect Sam McCue, among others, including projected Caleb Malhotra top-15 pick for the 2026 NHL Draft.
Danford was ranked No. 2 by The Leafs Nation this summer. Easton Cowan has definitely graduated to the NHL, so Danford could be considered the Leafs’ top prospect at this point, with a chance to compete for a spot in the NHL next fall.

This is what Ellis wrote about Danford in August:

Danford already has plenty of big-game experience, having played in two consecutive OHL championship series. Neither turned out to be fertile, but he still looked good regardless. Danford is a guy his teammates like to rely on, as he is rarely caught making a mistake when distributing the puck. I saw Danford play on both sides of the blue line last year, but I think he has something on the left side – it suits his shot better. Danford said he hopes to be like Chris Tanev, which I think is a fair comparison. He’ll probably excel as a number four defenseman in Toronto, but I think he’ll be pretty reliable.
