The Major League Baseball All-Star competition from 2027 is organized by the Cubs on the Wrigley Field in Chicago, commissioner Rob Manfred announced on Friday morning. MLBs 97th Midsummer Classic takes place on July 13 of that year.
“This is an honor for our team, our city and our state,” said Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts in this morning’s press release. “We can’t wait to show how we have saved this iconic ballpark. Wrigley Field means so much for Cubs fans and millions of people who have visited what we believe is a baseball cathedral and one of the best tourist destinations of Illinois.
It will be the fourth time of the Cubs that the All-Star game organizes their first since 1990. The Cubs also organized All-Star Games in 1947 and 1962. Wrigley Field now becomes the only active MLB stadium that organizes the All-Star game four times. Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium (closed in 1995) and the old Yankee Stadium (closed in 2008) are the only other MLB locations that organize four All-Star Games.
“I welcome the Ricketts family, the entire CUBS organization, the city of Chicago and the Chicago Sports Commission for presenting an impressive vision for 2027 All-Star Week,” said Manfred in his own prepared explanation within the release of this morning. “The hard work that has been submitted to transform the entire Wrigleyville into an excellent destination deserves to be celebrated and shared in a national stage. We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to the historic Wrigley field and works together with the Cubs, city and state functionaries of, and the local organization group group Chicago.
Of course the All-Star game 2027 is dressed by the threatening ghost of a potential work stop. The active collective negotiation agreement includes the seasons of 2022-26 and ends on December 1 of next year. With different owners and Manfred themselves publicly refer to their desire for a salary limit – and the union Swift Retort that would be a cap for “institutionalized collusion” -A other Lockout implemented by the competition is speculated on a large scale.
Major League Baseball locked the players in the low season 2021-22-one decision that resulted in a 99-day transaction freezing and joined the 2022 season for months. The two parties agreed with an eleventh hour deal and a short spring training with which a full 162 games could be played. A similar stalemate could take place in the low season 2026-27, although if the competition is serious in his desire to maintain steadily for a salary limit, which is expected to be a non-starter for the trade union and the loss of competitions in the 2027 season would be more seriously threatened in the 2027 season.
Today asked for an unforeseen planning for the All-Star-Hoop of Wigley Field in the case of a Labor interruption of 2027, Manfred only replied: “My emergency plan is to conclude an agreement with the players and play the 2027 season” (Link via ESPN’s Jesse Rogers).
