Rotation aid is on the way for the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs have traded for veteran rightshander Mike Soroka from the Washington Nationals, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletics reported Wednesday. The package that Chicago sent back to Washington in exchange for Soroka was not immediately known.

At the age of 27, Soroka is a former All-Star who earned the honor as a member of the Atlanta Braves in 2019. That was also the best year of Soroka in the Bigs, because he went 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA and 142 Strikeouts of more than 29 in total.

But Soroka’s career has since been put back by several brutal injuries. He tore his Achilles-tendon in 2020 and then suffered a complete re-creation of the same Achilles while he was still in his rehabilitation process in 2021. Soroka missed two full MLB seasons before returning halfway through the 2023 campaign.

This season for the Nationals, Soroka was more of an inner eater than anything, with a 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA and 87 strikeouts over 16 in total starts. But Soroka should take advantage of the switch to a more pitcher -friendly park in Wigley Field, and he is also in the last year of his contract.

The Cubs are a great 63-45 this season, but are a bit weak in their rotation behind Ace Shota Imanaga (who recently missed two months due to a hamstring injury) and 2025 All-Star Matthew Boyd. Jameson Taillon (Kalf) is still on the injured list, leading to Rookie Cad Horton and Reisman Colin Rea who are familiar with meaningful starts.

Soroka, who also threw the bullpen for the Chicago White Sox in 2024, must be versatile enough to play any role that the Cubs need. In the meantime, the 44-64 Nationals are very much in sales mode and Earlier in the day also exchanged some other remarkable pitchers.
