Cubs 11, Rockies 7: Swanson does it all for Chicago

Cubs 11, Rockies 7: Swanson does it all for Chicago

3 minutes, 27 seconds Read

Another tough Germán Márquez start was made harder by Dansby Swanson, whose three hits and six RBI ran the way for the victorious Cubs.

For what looks like the millionth time this season, the Rockies were in an early hole. That was thanks to Nico Hoerner, who doubled by one to set up his teammate Dansby Swanson to bring the first run of the game home. He did more than that, where he hit the hanging curveball of Márquez in the left field for a two-run explosion, his 20th of the season.

Márquez saw the opponent send the ball over the wall again. It is the sixth consecutive start in which he allowed at least one home run.

Swanson was not the only Cub who took a trot around the bases. Ian Happ Goard saw the top of the fourth for the 17th time in 2025, as a result of which Chicago’s lead expanded to 3. Perhaps that was to be expected when considering Happ’s flashy songs versus Márquez. Anyway, the two shots bring Colorado to a difficult place early.

Of all the Rockies who made their debut this season – and there have been plenty – few had the immediate impact that Yanquild Fernández has. He continued to fill his solid early statistics with another home run on Friday, this is a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to reduce his team within one.

Among the many frustrations that Rockies fans endured this season, the rise of Fernández was one of the most exciting. Has Colorado found a Power Bat to anchor its line -up in the future? We can only hope.

After Fernández wanted to dig the Rockies out of the hole, the Cubs just bury them deeper.

When the top of the fifth inning began, Márquez looked to keep the scoring difference at just one point. Instead it went pear -shaped. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Pete Crow-Armstrong, who brought a run home on a sacrificial fly. Ian Happ then continued his strong impressions against Márquez by doubling two more home, which raised the benefit of Cubs to 3. Another walk would finally chase Márquez from the competition.

Jaden Hill came in in the hope of stopping the bleeding, but Swanson welcomed him with a triple, cleaning up the bases and set up Chicago 8-2. A last Matt Shaw RBI Single brought the ninth run of the Cubs home before the inning finished.

The Line -up of Colorado should collect some magic if they hoped to come back to this. The last pitching line by Germán Márquez: 4 1/3 innings, in which he allowed eight points on nine hits, three walks and no strikeouts. Yeesh.

Even if the game seems out of reach, you still have to take your currents. After all, that is the rule of baseball, and despite the outcome of the competition that seemed written in stone, it was good to see that the Rockies put together productive ABs.

The bottom of the seventh opened with singles from Ezequiz Tovar and Hunter Goodman. Brenton Doyle then doubled to bring Tovar home, while Goodman scored on Kyle Karros’s subsequent sacrifice to bring the Rockies their fifth point.

The eighth saw Fernández Double (serious, how good is this guy?) Before he scored on Kyle Farmer’s seventh home run of the season – not less from #oldfrind Drew Pomeranz, no less!

Unfortunately, even these late panting of life were not enough to overcome such a big shortage. Although Doyle ran and Karros struck to open the bottom of the ninth inning, Warming Bernabel rolled into a rally-dead doubles and Fernández flew to the end to end the competition. The Rockies hit 2-from-18 with runners in a score position and left 10 men at the base.

Mccade Brown (0-1, 9.82 ERA) will start his second career in game two of the series with the Cubs, which encounters Javier Assad (0-1, 3.86 ERA).

That game starts at 6:10 PM MDT. See you soon!
