An official injury update from Crystal Palace, likely availability for the Newcastle United match on Sunday afternoon.
Oliver Glasner is missing many players.
The Crystal Palace boss is actually giving this update with a previous game in mind first.
Eddie Howe and Newcastle United won 3-1 at Burnley on Tuesday in one of six midweek matches played that evening.
However, Crystal Palace are one of eight Premier League teams playing on Thursday evening, meaning they will have less than 72 hours of preparation and recovery before taking on Newcastle United on Sunday at 3pm.
Those preparations have been further hampered by an ever-growing injury list, which has clearly had a huge impact on their form, which has fallen off a cliff.
The only one of their last five matches that Crystal Palace have not lost was a 2-2 draw at home to Finnish minnows KUIPS, with Palace needing a late equalizer to even get a point in that game.
Crystal Palace play Fulham at home, kicking off later today at 5.30pm.
Ahead of the Fulham game, Oliver Glasner gave more details on two players he hoped would be available for both the Fulham and Newcastle games, but clearly not the news he wanted to hear on the medical/fitness side of things.
Oliver Glasner on Chris Richards: “Chris Richards is not back [for the Fulham game] and for Newcastle United [on Sunday] it will be tight. His foot is too swollen, so he can’t wear a boot now, it’s too painful!’
Oliver Glasner on Eddie Nketiah: “Eddie is out for this Fulham game, so let’s look at the next game against Newcastle United. We don’t know exactly how long it will last… we’ll have to take it one game at a time. It’s a bit of his muscle, but we don’t know at the moment how serious it is. Obviously he’s had a few hamstring problems this year and that’s why we’re being cautious.”
Eddie Howe and Newcastle United know full well how difficult things are this season, when it comes to dealing with every midweek round of European and domestic cup commitments AND when it comes to dealing with a long list of injured players.
Crystal Palace played ten matches between November 27 and December 28. Now they play Fulham on January 1, Newcastle on January 4, Villa at home on January 7 and away in the FA Cup on January 10.
I don’t see Oliver Glasner taking any chances in the match against Newcastle United, with players concerned about lingering injuries. The Palace boss could even see this NUFC match as one where he will also have to rest some of those who are not injured due to having to play so many games in quick succession.
These are the nine Crystal Palace players likely to be missing against Newcastle United:
Chris Richards (foot injury)
Daniel Munoz (knee injury)
Chadi Riad Dnanou (knee injury)
Ismaila Sarr (African Cup)
Eddie Nketiah (muscle injury)
Cheick Doucouré (knee injury)
Daichi Kamada (Hamstring injury)
Rio Cardines (muscle injury)
Caleb Kporha (Back injury)
