Basketball Australia has announced the team that will travel to Uaanbaatar, Mongolia for the FIBA U16 Asia Cup in August to September.
Greg Vanderjagt, who is currently at the Brisbane Bullets as an assistant, will lead the team as the young group exit in the Junior National Team Cycle.
Vanderjagt’s first formal involvement with the group was for the recent preparation tour in China, which navigated 8 games in three cities in 11 days. The former NBL veterinarian who became a coach is looking forward to the opportunity to lead the Crocs and represent the Green & Gold.
“Every time you get the chance to represent Australia, it is an honor, having the chance to lead our nation in this campaign is something I am incredibly grateful for,” he said.
“Competing in the right way for our country with a group of young men who have a common goal and goal is what I am most enthusiastic about. Seeing the growth and development of each of these athletes on the journey is incredibly worthwhile for me.”
The level of competition continues to adapt with ever -changing global trends and adjustments in Asia and Oceania.
“The athletics and skill level of athletes quickly accelerates all over the world, which provides us with important challenges that we are ready to take on immediately,” Vanderjagt said.
“” The international junior landscape is constantly growing in terms of the level of athletes and coaches who participate in their nations. The challenges with which we will be confronted at the Asia Cup are diverse and every day will offer a different style for our team to fight, “said Vanderjagt.
“From the speed and photography of Japan, to the physicality of New Zealand to the enormous size of the Chinese group with which we are confronted, we must be flexible and adaptable every day in our planning to enable our athletes to be successful.”
Australia has won gold during the tournament in the U16 category since migration to the FIBA Asia conference. The crocs fell newly fell into a 79 -76 classic against new -Zeeland in the final of the last meeting, which was organized in Doha.
