Cristian Romero criticizes Tottenham on social media

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has often posted messages on social media that seem to invoke the Spurs hierarchy – so we’re highlighting them all after his latest outburst.

It has been another tough season for Tottenham.

Spurs are fourteenth in the table, with just one win in their last six Premier League games.

They lost 3-2 at Bournemouth on Wednesday and the fans are losing patience.

Supporters were already furious with their team’s performance, but after pictures of the manager Thomas Frank drinks from an Arsenal cup appeared online, their anger has reached boiling point.

However, they’re not the only ones fed up. Tottenham captain Romero took to social media in a now-edited post on Instagram.

In the caption, he appeared to take a swipe at the club’s leadership, accusing them of “lies”.

The post has since been edited to remove such phrases, but it is not the first time Romero has publicly spoken out against the club.

After the loss at Bournemouth, Romero apologized to the fans on social media.

But he also said that “other people” need to speak out in “times like these.”

He added that those numbers “only appear when things are going well, to tell a few lies.”

Cristian Romero’s original Instagram post called out the club’s hierarchy.

Romero, 27, later deleted the post and reuploaded it with a near-identical caption after removing the section criticizing club figures.

“Apologies to all the fans of yours who follow us everywhere, who are always there and will always be,” Romero’s post read.

“We are responsible, there is no doubt about that. But we will continue to face it and try to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club.”

His words seemed to resonate with teammates, with fellow Spurs players Richarlison, Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons and Radu Dragusin adding comments under the post.

Romero’s Tottenham teammates have responded in support of his amended message.

“At times like this, it should be other people who come and speak, but that doesn’t happen, as has been happening for several years. They only show up when things are going well.

“We will stay here, work, stay together and give everything to change things. Especially in times like these, being silent, working harder and moving forward together is part of football.”

What has Romero posted on social media in the past?

While the edited message removed all shots at Tottenham’s senior management, Romero has never been shy about speaking out.

The Argentine defender also mentioned “the many obstacles that have always existed and always will continue to exist” in his tribute to former manager Ange Postecoglou following his dismissal in June.

And in 2024, Romero called out Tottenham’s board over a lack of investment.

He said: “Manchester City compete every year, you see Liverpool strengthening their squad, Chelsea strengthening their squad, not doing well, getting stronger again, and now they are seeing results.

“Those are the things you have to imitate. You have to realize when something goes wrong, hopefully, they.” [the board] realize it.”

And in the same year he reposted a Spanish journalist’s criticism of Tottenham’s handling of their international players’ travel after a break.

Fans will no doubt be happy to see their captain stick his head above the ground.

But summoning the board is a dangerous move for anyone who works at a football club.

Manchester United have fired manager Ruben Amorim this week after his explosive press conference in which the Portuguese also targeted the management of his club.

Romero must therefore be careful with how he walks unless he too wants to be shown the exit door.
