Crime-conscious homebuyers prioritize security features – realestate.com.au

New data analysis reveals Brisbane’s top suburbs for illegal entry offences.


Brisbane homebuyers are adding security cameras and garage door locks to their property wish list, alongside butler’s pantries and saunas, as a new report shows burglaries have increased by more than 30 per cent in some river towns.

Analysis of Queensland Police Service crime data by Titan Shutters found that the number of unlawful entry offenses in Brisbane was in the thousands in Brisbane’s worst-affected suburbs.

Hendra recorded the highest number of unlawful entry offences, at 2,156, in the twelve months to December 1, 2025.

Upper Mount Gravatt ranked second with 1944 violations, followed by Brisbane City with 1934 violations.

The report noted that Brisbane City was the only suburb where more illegal entry into non-residential properties occurred than houses, reflecting the different risk profile of CBD environments compared to suburban areas.

“In the most recent 12-month period, approximately 70 percent of unlawful entry cases were classified under residential property categories, compared to retail and other property types combined,” the report said.

“This highlights that illegal entry and property-related incidents remain a major concern for homeowners, not just businesses.”

Over a three-year period, Coorparoo saw the biggest increase in burglaries, up 39.29 percent to a total of 738.

During the same time, violations increased by 36.69 percent in The Gap, 34.28 percent in Carina and 30.44 percent in Boondall.

Titan Shutters CEO David Spottiswood said the data reflected a shift in the way homeowners approached security decisions.

“What’s striking about this data is that even as the number of violations decreases year over year, the long-term trend continues to increase in many suburbs,” he said.

“For homeowners, this underlines the importance of looking beyond short-term fluctuations and considering security solutions that provide ongoing home protection.”

Zoran Solano, co-founder of Hot Property Buyers Agency, said homebuyers in Brisbane were more aware than ever about crime rates and home safety.

“That’s definitely something people think about when they buy something,” he said.

“We often notice that investors refer to crime mapping in the initial stages of a search.

“When it comes to owner-occupiers, it’s certainly a conversation we have as we walk through a home.

“After purchase, we connect customers with our electrician to add security lighting and cameras.”

Mr Solano said buyers were looking for or adding features from sensor lighting, garage door latches and mesh security screens to alarms, security cameras and secure front fencing.

“One area where this is common is where knockdown rebuilds are taking place,” he said.

“These are in gentrifying areas that have historically been lower socio-economic areas.

“We are seeing people adding multiple layers of security measures to these knockdown reconstructions, such as front gates with intercoms, security mesh instead of a diamond grille, and additional layers of security for car accommodations.

“In some more affluent areas, I see neighborhoods coming together and paying for a nightly safety patrol.”

Mr Solano said safety-conscious buyers were even turning away from traditional homes in Queensland due to concerns.

“These properties are often more difficult to secure due to features such as casement windows,” he said.

“People are choosing not to buy Queenslanders or they are making changes such as replacing casement windows with aluminum sliders, which aren’t as atheistically appealing, but they do address the safety and maintenance issues.”
