During a discussion on Sky Sports, Morgan noted that if T20 cricket and franchise leagues had not emerged, cricket would struggle to stay afloat in today’s times.
“I think if the shortest format of the game didn’t exist, if IPL never happened, if there were no other franchise leagues in the world, I think cricket would eventually die in a ditch. The level of popularity would decline. Trying to sell a five-day game or especially a one-day game to young kids is very, very difficult now,” he told Sky Cricket.
He further cited that it is very difficult to sell anything to young kids and T20 cricket brings a new audience and excitement to the game. And contrary to popular belief, it actually helps other longer formats grow as well.
“Selling things to your children is very, very difficult. But if you can get a glimpse of this wonderful product that exists to get young children involved in the game, then that is your introduction and your way to the right path. This is a beautiful sport that we play. You can learn so many valuable lessons in life by playing this sport. This is the shortest format. If you enjoy this, you might also enjoy Test match cricket,” Morgan added.
“T20 cricket has changed the game forever. I don’t buy the argument that the shortest format is the food of Test cricket,” he concluded.
The 39-year-old was one of the most influential figures in the revival of English white-ball cricket. Under Morgan’s captaincy, the Three Lions won their first-ever ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019.
