We all know you need to switch on your backswing. It’s the way you turn that makes the difference. To use a few boxing analogies, high handicappers tend to cross to the left. Better players make an uppercut. Here’s what I mean – plus a visual to help you see and feel the difference.
With any iron, return to your normal setup, then swing up and hold. Have a friend place an alignment stick over your elbows, as shown in the photos above. If you’re struggling with consistency or speed, chances are the alignment stick looks like the one on the left: parallel to the ground.
This indicates that you have simply rotated your shoulders, probably with a little too much movement of the ball. Yes, you’re turned, but you’re not really ‘loaded’. This is the dreaded left turn, which can lead to a serious lack of power and many downswing problems.
You need to build an uppercut into your backswing. In the top right photo, notice how at the top the alignment stick is pointed more toward the ground. It is these types of turns that properly plane the club and create the “load” you need for a powerful downswing on the plane. Think of turning while maintaining the tilt you establish at address. It is the easy way to always catch the ball firmly.
