Create a ’90s grainy grunge text effect in minutes with this Pixelmator tutorial. Learn to use the Zoom Blur and Dot Screen filters for a stunning faux 3D printing look.

There’s something undeniable about the revival of the ’90s grunge and rave aesthetic in modern graphic design, or at least I believe so, or it’s just the algorithms that confuse me. I’m seeing a return to rough textures, high contrast and that “photocopied” look that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly digital in my feeds and it’s inspiring me.

In today Pixelmator tutorialwe’re going to explain how to achieve a rugged ’90s design look using a surprisingly simple workflow. We don’t use heavy 3D software here. Instead, we hack two powerful filters:Zoom blur And Points screen—to simulate a deep, extruded 3D effect with that classic halftone texture.

The process

The beauty of this effect lies in its speed. It transforms flat typography into a dynamic, spatial element in a few seconds. Here’s an overview of how we achieve this look in Pixelmator.

1. Typography first

Start with a bold, sans serif font. This effect works best with thick letterforms, as they provide enough surface area for the shadows and textures to really pop. Create your text in white against a black background to maximize contrast.

2. The Faux-3D Secret: Zoom Blur

Instead of manually duplicating layers or using 3D extrusion tools, we use the Zoom blur effect.

  • Find the Zoom Blur filter.
  • Drag the center of the blur away from your text. This determines the direction of your ‘light source’ and shadow.
  • Increase the amount. You’ll immediately see the text spread out, creating a perfect illusion of depth and extrusion.

3. Adding grain: point screen

Now for the texture. To get that “printed on cheap paper” vibe, we apply the Points screen effect (often known as Halftone in other apps).

  • Apply the effect to your blurred text.
  • Adjust the sharpness and scale of the points.
  • The Dot Screen filter works in tandem with the gradients created by Zoom Blur, turning smooth fades into grainy, retro patterns.

Why it works

This technique bridges the gap between digital precision and analog imperfection. The Zoom blur provides the modern, geometric structure, while the Points screen disrupts it with organic noise, reminiscent of early 90s zine culture and grunge graphics.

Try this on your next poster project or album cover concept. It’s a quick way to add depth and character without overcomplicating your workflow.
