If you know your BMWs, you know that the M2 is not built at the Munich factory. The rear-wheel drive coupe, codenamed G87, is assembled exclusively in Mexico at the San Luis Potosi location. Nevertheless, this Gymkhana-style video was filmed in the historic factory, where the luxury brand has been producing cars since 1922.
The latest project from the talented Red Bull Driftbrothers is a tire-shredding smoke machine with an exhaust mounted just under the roof. It follows their poor M4 built in 2021 for the Drift Masters European Championship. Elias Hountondji calls it the ‘Ultimate Drift Machine’, a not-so-subtle nod to BMW’s iconic ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ slogan.
This crazy M2 is a single-seat floating beast that barely squeezes in between all the robots and car bodies in the Munich factory. The drone footage is nothing short of spectacular, especially the scene where the camera flies through the car in the middle of the drift. We think the late Ken Block would have had high praise for this marketing stunt.
Although we see the car in action, Elias says it is still a work in progress and development is not yet complete. He is confident the tail-happy M2 will be ready in time for next year’s Drift Masters European Championship. In addition to the top-exit quad exhaust tips, the baby M boasts a beefy body kit with wider fenders and a rear wing above a trunk lid spoiler.
The massive hood bulge indicates serious engine upgrades. It still uses the road-going M2’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, but power has more than doubled. While an M2 CS has an output of 523 hp, this one-off M2 Drift Competition unleashes an insane 1,085 hp.
Torque has also nearly doubled, from 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) to a mountain-moving 922 lb-ft (1,250 Nm). For obvious reasons, everything goes to the rear axle. However, reports suggest that BMW could launch an M2 with xDrive as early as next year. If that happens, logic tells us it will only happen with an automatic transmission.
Meanwhile, the Red Bull Driftbrothers are working with the BMW M Academy to modify cars to make them easier to drift, so participants can learn proper slide control. Obviously these cars won’t be as wild as the one-off M2, but they will receive several tweaks to make drifting more accessible. BMW charges €490 for a half-day course, rising to €1,490 for the full experience, including taxi laps of the M4 with Elias.
Here’s an interesting fact about the factory where this video was filmed: cars with internal combustion engines won’t be built for much longer. From the end of 2027, the Munich facility will exclusively assemble electric vehicles, becoming the first existing factory in BMW’s production network to make a complete transition to electric vehicles.
