Craig Berube won’t reveal timeline for Joseph Woll’s return, but says goaltender is in ‘a really good place’

The Toronto Maple Leafs could be ready to welcome back half of their goaltending tandem in the coming days.

As the Maple Leafs hit the ice in preparation for Wednesday night’s game against the Utah Mammoth, Anthony Stolarz stepped into the starting net in what would be his 11th start of the season, which is nearly a third of the action he saw in last season. Cayden Primeau, whom the Leafs acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes prior to the season, will fill in as backup goaltender in Joseph Woll’s absence, but it appears Woll’s return is imminent.

How close is Joseph Woll to game action? Craig Berube: “It’s getting close. I don’t want to give you a timeline and then it’s changed, but I can just say this: he’s in a really good place”

Woll has been away from the team since preseason, with very little information on why he was absent. Both general manager Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube have been tight-lipped about the ailment that kept Woll off the ice, and it has remained that way since returning to the team about a week ago. Either way, Woll appears to be about to return to action.

Woll played in 42 regular season games for the Leafs last season, posting a 27-14-1 record with a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.73 and a save percentage (SV%) of .909. He remained the Leafs’ backup in the postseason until Stolarz’s injury in Game 1 of the second round against the Florida Panthers, and while his playoff numbers didn’t impress at all, it was a tough situation for him to find himself in.

The Maple Leafs have a back-to-back game this weekend, hosting the Boston Bruins on Saturday night before welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to town on Sunday night. Berube would not confirm whether Woll would be back for Sunday’s game, but one way or another he will be a very welcome boost to a team that has suffered without their 1B goaltender.
