Craig Berube emphasizes that Maple Leafs must find confidence through hard work after another loss

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in their toughest stretch of the season, taking on some of the NHL’s best, and once again the team laid a full egg on home ice.

The Colorado Avalanche came to town for a rare Sunday afternoon game and the Avs’ speed and resilience were too much for the Maple Leafs, who lost 4-1. Head coach Craig Berube spoke after the game about what he saw from his team on Sunday, and it has become abundantly clear: the losses piling up on home ice are starting to take their toll on this hockey club.

“I thought we came out and things went well. We made two mistakes on the puck play and it was in our net,” Berube said after the game. “Execution was obviously the cause of a few goals. Give their guys two on one, or strange rushes and you’re in trouble. We’re down 2-0 and that deflated our team a little bit. We tried to fight back in the third, but overall we have to solve the execution part for me.”

“The level of competition, when we go into a match, we have to come together as a team and fight through it, because it’s going to happen, we all know that, but losing here at home has worn on our team a little bit. But that’s professional sports, we’ve all got to pull together here and get ready for Tuesday. We need a win, that’s what it comes down to.”

Toronto was outscored 37-33, including 17-6 in the opening frame, as the Avalanche showed off their lightning pace, which seemed to overwhelm the Leafs, especially that of Morgan Rielly and Simon Benoit on defense, both of whom had tough games. The Leafs haven’t won on home ice in more than two weeks in regulation and now move to 0-3-1 on their current five-game homestand. Berube knows something has to change here, and quickly.

“I think we came home here after a pretty good road trip, and in my opinion a lot of mistakes, a lot of execution mistakes with the puck and some other things that led to us being where we are here at home.”

The Maple Leafs will remain in snowy conditions in Toronto to host the red-hot Buffalo Sabers on Tuesday night. A match that has quickly become the most important game of the season for the team and an absolute must win to get this team back on track. One thing’s for sure: Right now, with the Olympic break approaching, these struggling Maple Leafs don’t have any confidence whatsoever.

“Well, that’s a choice, come on, these are NHL players. I mean, you get paid to play in the NHL, you have to go out and play… I know the feeling. Confidence comes from hard work.”
