Coventry City and Swansea City have had contrasting seasons in the Championship. While Swansea are in 16th place and have undergone a management change Vitor Matos entersCoventry are flying and leading the way in the second tier, eight points ahead of second place.

Despite such disparity in their league standings, both clubs could go head-to-head in January. The Swans and Sky Blues are both in the market for a winger in the winter.

The pair have now been linked with former Celtic winger Liel Abada Sky Sports via Transfer Center Live. Abada currently plays in the MLS with Charlotte FC, after leaving Celtic in 2024.

Abada has scored 12 goals in 56 MLS appearances since signing. His contract expires at the end of 2026 and both parties want to take advantage of this, but the MLS team does have an option to extend his deal for another year.

Attacking additions could be key for Swansea City

Swansea City are one of many teams that will be aiming for a play-off push in the second half of the season. Given their recent form, they won’t see the eight-point gap to the top six as a major concern.

However, if they want to close that gap to the play-off spots, they will need attacking reinforcements. The Swans’ attackers have struggled this season, apart from top scorer Zan Vipotnik.

Vipotnik has 10 goals to his name, but after that the Swans’ second top scorers are Ronald and Adam Idah with three goals each. Abada could be the perfect player to boost Matos’ scoring options.

Although he is not a free-scoring winger, he certainly has an eye for goal. In his first two seasons at Celtic he scored 28 goals in 103 games.

Frank Lampard’s current wide options

Coventry City also need more depth ahead of the January transfer window. That problem has come to light at times this season and was underlined in the 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town when the visitors’ substitutions helped turn the game around.

The Sky Blues can rely on quality with Ephron Mason-Clark and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto. However, they remain the only natural wingers Frank Lampard has at his disposal.

Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante have been deployed in wide roles, but are much more effective in the middle. Adding competition and depth in wide areas is something Lampard will need support with this winter.
