What is this new medicine?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published updated guidelines Support for the use of Lenacapavir, a new injectable medicine, as a way to help patients with a high risk.
The drug is intended to be conceived as a two -year injection, and acts as an extra prevention option for people who run the risk of running out of HIV, especially in risky areas. The guidance recommends the use of Lenacapavir in combination with other HIV prevention drugs, such as Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) and other forms of pre-blot statement prophylaxsis (prep).

These studies showed that Lenacapavir resulted in a significant reduction in HIV -acquisition and high treatment effectiveness compared to other daily oral prep drugs such as TDF. More research is needed to know how this medicine can influence certain populations, such as sex workers, people who inject drugs and detained individuals.
Lenacapavir did not show any adverse results when administered to pregnant persons and is not associated with negative birth results. The studies also showed no evidence that Lenacapavir had meaningful interactions with hormonal contraception or gender -confirming hormone therapy.
Does it work for other STDs?
Lenacapavir is specifically designed for HIV. Collected evidence during these studies found comparable transfer percentages of other infections compared to other PrEP recipients.
How is it rolled out?
The US government has announced plans to invest in Lenacapavir. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to reach to 2 million people with the medicine by 2028, hoping that it will help save hundreds of thousands of lives. In the coming months, the US will work with countries with the largest HIV/AIDS epidemics to develop roll-out strategies with a focus on preventing mother-on-child transmission.
This announcement comes as a blessing for many researchers and specialists, who have expressed concern about recent cuts on global financing for health and research initiatives.
The American financial obligation is a partnership between the Global Fund and Gilead Science, a Biopharma company established in California that makes the medicine.
For decades, the US had been the world leader in combating HIV. Pepfar (the Emergency Plan of the President for Aids for AIDS) usually had strong support from all political parties. After it was founded in 2003, Pepfar had invested more than $ 120 billion worldwide to help fight HIV and AIDS.
