Could the Yankees sign Kyle Schwarber? This insider seems to think so

2 minutes, 39 seconds Read

The thought of Kyle Schwarber in a New York Yankees uniform, standing 300 feet from the short porch in right field, is enough to make any Yankee fan’s heart skip a beat. Schwarber put on a power-hitting clinic in 2025, collecting a career-high 56 home runs in the NL while hitting .240/.365/.563 with the Philadelphia Phillies. His 132 RBI were the most in baseball.

If there was ever a player tailor-made to hit in the Bronx, it would be Schwarber. His presence on deck would make any pitcher think twice about walking Aaron Judge. The sad fact for New York fans, however, is that Schwarber is a DH-only type of player, and the Yankees already have one. Giancarlo Stanton, the oft-injured DH, faces a significant logistical challenge in making the Schwarber pinstripe dream a reality.

Still, one MLB insider isn’t so sure it’s a deal breaker. In an article for ESPN, Jesse Rogers named the Yankees as a landing spot for Schwarber, replacing Cody Bellinger. He wrote this after discussing his seamless fit with the Phillies:

“[Schwarber] could also tie the Yankees lineup if Cody Bellinger walks. Can you imagine his home run totals with the short porch at Yankee Stadium?

While Rogers’ comments are accurate, he doesn’t elaborate on what New York’s defense would look like or how exactly he would fit, only that his bat would be great in the Bronx. That said, can the Yankees make it work?

We take a look at the Yankees’ options if they sign Kyle Schwarber

If the Yankees were to land Schwarber, it would force him or Stanton to the right — or to the left, depending on the size of the stadium on road trips. Schwarber played a total of 66 innings during the regular season, spread over eight games in left field. Stanton played a total of 132 innings, spread over 20 games in the corner positions in the outfield. Neither worked that well on the diamond.

The nuclear option in a Schwarber-Yankees deal scenario would be to dump Stanton. While he still has plenty of power and was a hero in the Yankees’ 2024 World Series run, Stanton was downright disappointing this past postseason. However, his annual injuries combined with his large salary make him virtually immobile. If the Yankees were to trade him, they would have to eat a large portion of his remaining contract, something the team would prefer to avoid.

Would Kyle Schwarber’s arrival in the Bronx be a dream come true? Yes, unequivocally. Would signing Schwarber be feasible for the Yankees? Probably not. With this in mind, signing Schwarber probably isn’t an option general manager Brian Cashman is considering – not that it isn’t an intriguing idea, regardless of the challenges.
