- Jeep hinted that it might bring the V-8 back to the market Great Cherokeealthough the brand has not announced any official plans regarding the change.
- Speak with The drivea senior engineer told the outlet to “stay tuned for more” when asked about the Hemi’s return.
- Last fall, Jeep’s CEO said Grand Cherokee customers “want options” when it comes to powertrains, leaving the door open for a return.
The pivot Stellantis has made in the past year in electrification and V-8 powertrains should have the automaker competing for a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. The company has all but abandoned efforts at pure electrification under former CEO Carlos Tavares, focusing instead on internal combustion engines. Specifically at Ram and Jeep, where recent reports have celebrated the Hemi line of V-8 engines.
That embrace of eight booming cylinders could mean that the Jeep Grand Cherokee will regain its lost Hemi V-8 in the near future. While the automaker hasn’t announced anything about a return of the 5.7-liter mill — which left the Grand Cherokee in 2023 and the Grand Cherokee L in 2024 — Jeep has noticeably left the door open to that possibility.
Speaking to fans last fall, Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf promised to keep the Wrangler Rubicon 392 around, while also saying that “people want options” when asked whether the 5.7 or 6.4 liter will return to the Grand Cherokee. More recently, Joe Aljajawi, a vehicle integration manager for the current Grand Cherokee, told The Drive to “stay tuned” when asked about that proposal.
Neither comment should be taken as confirmation that the Grand Cherokee will definitely get another V-8, but given Stellantis’ recent reports, they shouldn’t be dismissed either. When asked about the report, a Jeep spokesperson said Car and driver that the company does not comment on “potential future product” for policy reasons.
