Coppins in dreamland after 5 wins over Hawera

Kate Coppins goes into Tuesday’s meeting in Hawera full of confidence, but is realistic that her best performance on Sunday’s course will be virtually impossible to match, let alone beat.

Yesterday the talented junior driver took half the card, with five wins in the running races on the ten-race programme.

“It was one of the best days of my life,” she says.

Tuesday, Coppins has eight drives on the 10-race card and while momentum is on her side, she remains focused on staying grounded.

“Dad always taught me that anything is possible when you step out on the court,” she said. “You could end up with absolute certainty and finish last. I never go out with any expectations, if I do I feel like I’m exaggerating them a bit. I like to just have the race in front of me.”

Coppins identified two runners trained by her grandmother Jill Coppins as her top prospects on Tuesday. She will team up with Rasmussin Effect in Race 2, the Fleming Family Mobile Pace, before reuniting with Jackka Opa in Race 7, the Nag ‘N’ Noggin New Owners Coming March Mobile Pace.

“I should go with Jaccka Opa again, like he won on Sunday, he just seems to go to another level on the grass. He doesn’t have much gate speed, but if he has pulled one I think he has a great chance.”

She also expects Rasmussin Effect to improve from his Sunday effort.

“Nan’s other one too, Rasmussin Effect, he did great and ran home really well, just had a bit of bad luck and got pushed around on Sunday.”

On the first day, Coppins arrived in Hawera with measured expectations.

“I thought I would have at least one winner,” Coppins said.

It just snowballed from there.

“Every time I come out on top it gives me a good feeling in my head. It definitely set the mood for the day and I started to feel a lot more confident.”

SHEZABETTORGIRL AND KATE COPPINS REPLAY

The fact that she got five was astonishing.

“It didn’t really dawn on me what I had done until I had experienced drivers who I looked up to and who texted and congratulated me,” she said.

“My mom, dad and grandma, I think they love it more than I do… I still haven’t noticed how big of an achievement it is!”

Kate Coppins’ five winners at Hawera on Sunday:

Race 3: Jacka Opa ($3.40) for Jill Coppins

Race 7: Forgiveness ($27.10) for Michael House
