Napoli boss Antonio Conte has unveiled his disbelief about Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay last summer, while he also unveiled his plan for Rasmus Hojlund.
Conte gives a statement about United Offload McTominay
Mctominay divorced with United last summer when he sealed a relocation of £ 25.7 million to Napoli. He had been with the Red Devils since the age of five, but thought he had to leave in search of regular minutes of the first team.
Saying that the Scotland International has been a success in Italy would be a huge understatement.
He has become a cult figure in Naples for almost no time thanks to the club to a scudetto last season. He registered 12 goals and four assists in 34 performances and earned him a nomination for the Ballon d’Or.
Mctominay started the 2025/26 campaign in a similar style and he seems to enjoy another fantastic year.
In anticipation of the Champions League meeting of Napoli with Manchester City in the Etihad, Conte opened himself when working with McTominay, which expressed disbelief about the fact that United allowed him to leave.
Conte told reporters”I knew him when he played with Manchester United because I coached twice in England. I saw a great potential in this player and was [asking] Why Scott McTominay is not dominant in England because he has a great potential. “
“When the possibility continues for Napoli, to be honest, at the first moment I didn’t believe it could happen. It happened and now he enjoys it.”
The Italian coach added: “For a player like he was born in Manchester United and there is a point in your career and life where you might have to change and try a different experience.”
“It happened to us and we are really, very happy because we are not only talking about a fantastic player, but also a fantastic man.”
Conte reveals his plan for Hojlund
On Deadline Day, Napoli confirmed that they had completed the signing of Hojlund of United. The DANE joined the Partenopei over a first loand deal, which is ready to become an obligation if they are eligible for the Champions League.
Hojlund opened his goals for Napoli during his debut while defeating Fiorentina 3-1.
Asked for Hojlund, Conte explained: “I knew Rasmus because he played with Atalanta and then he came to Man United. In my opinion we are talking about a player with a great potential and he is only 22, so he has a whole career for him.”
“When we talked to him, I felt that he was very happy to get this new experience and he said he was ready and wanted to play for me and for Napoli.”
“He has a great potential and now it is up to me to improve and grow and become a real, real top striker. Whether they come from the Premier League or another championship, the most important thing is that the players arrive or can give something to the field.”
“Hojlund has not had much luck in recent years or a great experience at Man United. He is a 22-year-old who has a whole career for him. He has shown that he has so much potential and so many things I have to work on to implement even more and make them even better.”
In the meantime, United is back in action on Saturday when they take on Chelsea.
