Max Verstappen says he is proud of the way Red Bull turned his 2025 season around and kept him in title contention after his Las Vegas Grand Prix win.
Initially, a dominant victory was secured for Lando Norris on Saturday evening, with Verstappen temporarily closing the gap with the McLaren driver to 42 points. This ensured that Verstappen already had a mathematical chance in the title battle on the way to Qatar both McLarens were disqualified for excessive plank wearand before the gap was closed to 24 points, the Dutchman said he enjoys fighting for victories on his own.
“I think that is the better approach,” said Verstappen. “It’s still a big gap. But we always try to maximize everything we have. And this weekend was the first. And in the coming weekends we will try to win the race again. And at the end of Abu Dhabi we will see where we end up.”
“But I am very proud of everyone. We have had a whole season with ups and downs and difficult times, but also very beautiful moments. And we have learned a lot throughout the season, and that is also very valuable for the coming years.”
“So that’s something we just have to hold on to [we’ll] Just try to improve even more to come back stronger next year and compete in the championship from the start of the year. But we are enjoying it now and then we will see what we can do again next week.”
Verstappen was 104 points behind then-championship leader Oscar Piastri after the Dutch Grand Prix seven races ago, and says a key part of his revival has been Red Bull’s ability to still score heavily on less competitive race weekends.
“We’ve been on the podium more consistently. Some races we haven’t been fighting for the win, but from, I would say, mid-’24 to mid-’25 we were probably more away from the podium than on it. And now at least we’re always fighting for second or third, but at least on the podium, and I think that’s already a really good step forward for us.”
“I think that of course it should have been that way from the beginning, if you really want to fight for a title. Unfortunately we didn’t do well in the beginning, but at least now it’s more consistent and sometimes it’s good enough to win.”
