During the opening round of the fight, Conor McGregor suffered a broken ankle, which left him unable to progress in the match, with Poirier winning by technical knockout after just five minutes. Afterwards, McGregor planned to return to action in June 2024, almost three years removed from the trilogy match with the now-retired Poirier.
A planned press conference about McGregor’s fight against Michael Chandler early that month was suddenly canceled. The fight itself would be postponed not long after due to “The Notorious” suffer a broken toe.
Conor McGregor is aiming for a return in the summer
Conor McGregor made news about his relationship with the UFC in early 2026. In January, he claimed that his current UFC contract had now been voided in the wake of the promotion’s new media rights deal with Paramount Plus and that he would be looking for a new deal.
Contract talks between McGregor and the UFC are ongoing and “The Notorious,” who remains hopeful of getting a spot at the UFC White House event on June 14, given an update Tuesday as far as discussions stand at the moment.
“So I’m in negotiations with the Ultimate Fighting Championship about the fight,” Conor McGregor began. “Or [I fight at] the White House or thereabouts. McGregor will return sometime in the summer.”
Time (potentially) is running out for McGregor’s UFC White House Hopes
With the UFC set to release details this week on specific fights for the June 14 card, time could be on Conor McGregor’s side to appear at UFC White House. On the other side of the equation, however, his ambitions may grow smaller by the day, if not by the hour, to secure a spot at this event.
Last month, Ari Emanuel, CEO of TKO Group, the parent company of the UFC, said made an appearance on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show. During the Super Bowl week interview, he revealed that the number of fights contested at UFC White House late this spring will be less than a typical UFC card.
“There will be about six to seven fights on June 14,” Emanuel said at the time. He [UFC CEO Dana White] hasn’t told us yet what the card is going to be, but I know they’re working pretty hard on it right now.”
Final thoughts
With more limited seating at the White House event than a usual show, Conor McGregor may be on the outside looking in when it comes to this card. If he secures one of the spots on the June 14 show, it will be front-page news.
However, if that’s not the case, it’s not the end of the world for him. Regardless of who Conor McGregor fights and where and when the bout takes place, it will be a highly anticipated return when he makes the walk to the Octagon.
He hasn’t fought in almost five years. A long break may soon end.
