Conor McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) has not actively fought in the world of combat sports since the summer of 2021. That in no way kept ‘The Notorious’ out of the headlines.

Since his last MMA fight four and a half years ago, McGregor has done just that become co-owner of David Feldman’s BKFCgiving him the opportunity to make important decisions in the promotion, and he also made appearances at BKFC events. A year ago, prior to BKFC’s KnuckleMania V, he appeared at the ceremonial weigh-ins.

However, Conor McGregor has never lost the urge to fight in the MMA cage. In July 2021, he made his UFC return in the evening’s main event at UFC 264. That evening, McGregor suffered a broken ankle during a trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier, which prevented him from continuing in the fight after the opening round.

Conor McGregor’s planned 2024 UFC return was scuttled due to injury

After UFC 264, McGregor was out of action for almost three years. In the aftermath of the historic UFC 300 at T-Mobile Arena in Enterprise, NV, UFC CEO Dana White took the stage for the UFC 300 post-fight press conference.

Late that Saturday night, the CEO announced that Conor McGregor would make the walk at UFC 303 on June 29, 2024 for a main event match against Michael Chandler (23-10 MMA, 2-5 UFC) to close out International Fight Week 2024. However, everything came undone a few weeks before the big night.

In early June 2024, both Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler were scheduled to take part in a press conference in the former’s home country of Ireland. Just hours before press time it was canceled, but it was confirmed that the fight itself would go ahead. Ultimately, the McGregor vs. Chandler match never took place after Conor McGregor suffered a broken toe. To date, the fight has never been rescheduled.

Conor McGregor looks back at the White House

Over the Independence Day holiday weekend in July, McGregor expressed his desire to appear on the UFC White House card. At the time, July 4, 2026 was suggested as the date for the card on the UFC schedule, but the show date has since been set for Saturday, June 14 in celebration of US President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.

In the months since Conor McGregor’s initial hope to appear on the show at the White House in Washington, DC has by no means disappeared. With the event almost five months away, he remains more determined than ever to be on the card.

His favorite opponent could see him rekindle a rivalry that first flared up in boxing’s squared circle nearly a decade ago. On Tuesday Conor McGregor took to his social media channels to challenge boxing legend Floyd Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) to a fight in the legendary Octagon.

“If you’re ready for that promised MMA fight, I’m here,” Conor McGregor told Mayweather in a social media post Tuesday afternoon. “The White House is nice in the summer, I hear.”

Looking back at Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather in boxing

In 2017, Conor McGregor took on Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring for a very exciting match.–broadcast the main event at the T-Mobile Arena on Showtime PPV. This match, advertised as “The Money Fight”, was notable for being the latter’s only return to competitive boxing after retiring from the sport three times previously.

The 2017 fight was Conor McGregor’s first and only foray into professional boxing. Although McGregor landed decent punches to the head early in the fight, forcing Mayweather to cover his crown, his luck did not last as the fight progressed into the later rounds.

In the 10th round of a scheduled 12, Floyd Mayweather uncorked a brutal flurry of punches to stun Conor McGregor. Referee Robert Byrd waved the match off after one minute and five seconds. This was the first time McGregor was knocked out in combat sports.

After the fightConor McGregor was interviewed by ESPN and gave his view on what happened in the ring.

“I think I smoked it in the early rounds,” he said. “I was quite handy with him in the early rounds and then he changed his style. He put his hands up and came down low, put his forehead on his chest and went to work. I wasn’t prepared, I didn’t expect that.”

Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather II: The Age Difference

If a UFC fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather does indeed take place in Washington late this spring, there will be a pretty big age difference between the fighters.

On June 14, McGregor will be a month away from his 38th birthday, while Floyd Mayweather has already turned 49 and will celebrate his birthday in February. This brings us to one final point:

Final thoughts

Like the previous match between the two, this will be another paper chase for both men, provided it actually happens. Mayweather hasn’t fought under competitive rules in almost a decade, and McGregor hasn’t fought in any capacity in almost half a decade.

With the laundry list of UFC championship fights rumored for the White House card, the McGregor vs. Mayweather rematch would likely be relegated to undercard status at best. Will this battle really happen?

It’s a matter of waiting again.
