Connor McDavid is sending a clear message about winning the Cup with the Oilers

Connor McDavid has accomplished just about everything you can dream of at the start of an NHL career. Eight 100-point seasons, five Art Ross Trophies, three Hart Trophies, a Rocket Richard Trophy and even a Conn Smythe, but the only thing that still eludes him is a Stanley Cup.

Back-to-back trips to the Finals, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion both times to the Florida Panthers, have only added fuel to the fire for the best player in the world.

McDavid is eager to get it done in Edmonton with this core group, and while he’s already shown that commitment by signing an extension, it never hurts to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.

During Saturday night’s After Hours with Scott Oake, McDavid was asked about his motivation for getting back into dancing with this group and finally getting the job done — and he didn’t say like it could happen in Edmonton, but like it absolutely would.

McDavid said:

“We’re hungry, we’re obviously a hungry group. We’re not going anywhere; there’s no let up in this group. Beat us down, we’ll keep coming back, coming back for more… These are moments that will stay with us forever, but it will make it that much more fun if we get the job done,”

If possible, the 28-year-old appears to be playing the best hockey of his life, and it shows in production with a ridiculous 68 points (24 goals, 44 assists) in 39 games played this season.

Any concerns should have been put to rest when McDavid’s extension was announced, but that doesn’t make his commitments any less important.

McDavid is one of the most driven athletes in the world right now, fully committed to bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton – and he doesn’t sound like someone who is planning an exit until that mission is accomplished.

Connor McDavid Oilers

Could he come in in a few years if they finally win one? Sure, it’s possible. But when that day comes, Oilers fans can do nothing but appreciate witnessing one of the greatest players of all time deliver a championship to the city and organization that means the world to them.

However, let’s not put the cart before the horse. There’s still plenty of work left for McDavid and company if they want to get the job done and win the ultimate prize – and getting through a loaded Western Conference won’t be easy.
