Confronting my biggest spelling demons (and yours).

Confronting my biggest spelling demons (and yours).

One of the joys of having an eponymous personal finance blog is that I never feel pressured to make sure every article is about, well… personal finance.

But Len, it says right in the headline that this is “The Unusual Personal Finance Blog for Responsible People.”

That is true – but not today.

Today I want to discuss a topic that affects everyone: spelling.

A few years ago I spoke to parents who had difficulty spelling their children’s names. Today I want to get introspective.

The reason I bring this up is because my boyfriend, Geoff, recently said he’s having trouble spelling my last name. Real?

How difficult is it to spell ‘Penzo’ anyway? I could understand if my name was Len Mxyzptlk. But my surname consists of five friendly letters that faithfully follow the phonetic law.

But maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on Goeff, because he said he struggles with other words too. For example, Jeff said he makes spelling mistakes all the time negotiation And entrepreneur. And Jeoff’s truly honest confession immediately appealed to me. In fact, it inspired me to open up about this Mine personal spelling demons.

Hopefully, by being honest, I’ll inspire you to share some words that confuse you too.

Spelling is difficult

My biggest spelling demons are that occasionally And staff. I usually tend to spell them as ‘occasionally’ and ‘personal’.

I’m having trouble with indicator at. And I still don’t know if the color that occupies the space between black and white is spelled “gray” or “gray,” even though my spell checker prefers the former.

Some words I hesitate even though I know how to spell them. For example: tireless. Think about it: when we spell fatigue with the letter “u”, how come tireless isn’t it spelled ‘tireless’?

In turn, Answers.com mentions 100 words that are difficult to spell. However, I don’t agree with all of them. They actually claim be guilty is a real bugger for most people. It is? How else would you spell it?

They also left out what in my opinion is the most misspelled word of all: to lose. Go to any comment board and you’ll see most people spell it ‘loose’.

For the most part, though, Answers.com does a pretty good job of using hard-to-spell words like: rhythm, embarrass, different, prevent, replace, syzygiaAnd floccinaucinihilipilification.

By the way, I just added it floccinaucinihilipilification to my spell checker.

One word I definitely have trouble with is spelling diarrhea. I bet you do too.

As a side note, the Honeybee has trouble with spelling Pepto Balistal. I know this because the only two times since we’ve been married that she put it on the weekly shopping list, she wrote “Pepto Bismo.”

And while that’s certainly not a fair reflection on the quality of her education, it does suggest that my family has a very high tolerance for bad Mexican food.

After all, two bottles of Pepto Bismol over a twenty year period isn’t that bad.
