Microsoft is the latest company to start rolling back expectations on working from home.
Microsoft is the latest company to start rolling back expectations on working from home.
In a memo posted on Microsoft Blog, Executive Vice President Amy Coleman explained her reasoning for the change. Microsoft claims it would like to go back to the days of yore, when employees “collaborated with the people down the hall.” While emphasizing the power of in-person community, the September 9 memo also recognized that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence required immediate attention that tools like Teams and instant messaging platforms cannot replicate.
“In the AI era, we are moving faster than ever, building world-class technology that is transforming the way people live and work, and how organizations everywhere operate. When you think about our history, the most meaningful breakthroughs happen when we build on each other’s ideas together in real time,” Coleman wrote.
Fortunately for employees, the company is not calling for a five-day in-person work week. Microsoft said employees who live within 50 miles of the Redmond campus will be expected on site at least three days a week by the end of February 2026. The policy will be rolled out in phases to other U.S. and international offices.
The announcement comes after NBCUniversal issued an ultimatum to its employees. In a memo that hybrid employees must be on-site Monday through Thursday starting January 5, 2026, and that employees who cannot comply, discuss a voluntary exit package with human resources.
“We are better when we are together,” wrote NBCU Chief Operating Officer Adam Miller.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 40 million people work from home. The slow but steady change in the structure of American households may be difficult for some. The consequences are already material for employees. Employees at companies that have tightened the policy report having to rearrange childcare plans, relocate or accept severance packages if they can’t comply.
As more companies insist that ‘togetherness’ is the path to success, the debate over office presence and productivity is likely to continue. Employers say they want teams to drive innovation together. Employees say the modern workplace must respect proven hybrid practices that have helped many balance work and life without hurting production.
