Award-winning comedian Joe Avati is selling a townhouse in Preston that is part of a complex he began developing in 2020 during the coronavirus lockdowns.

World-renowned Australian comedian Joe Avati will bring the five-year saga of a Preston development project to a close with a $1.05 million to $1.15 million auction two weeks before Christmas.

Avati became Australia’s best-selling comic internationally in 2012 and will tour America and Canada early in the new year.

Before then, he’s wrapping up the current Comedy Cartel tour with Tahir, George Kapiniars, Sashi Perera, Ting Lim and Joe White, taking place in Melbourne from December 4 to 7.

The award-winning comedian previously broke a record with a home renovation and extension in Princes Hill, also in Melbourne’s north, when he sold his former home in December 2021.

“My last auction was in 2021, which broke a record in Princes Hill,” Avati said.

His latest effort is almost five years in the making, after he bought the Beauchamp St estate in June 2020 and spent more than a year watching Covid ‘put a spanner in the wheels’ as Melbourne went in and out of lockdown for 262 days.

While Avati and his wife Natalie have built two townhouses on the site, they are retaining one as an investment and selling one at 52B Beauchamp St, Preston.

The home’s kitchen features a steam oven and super-sized island benches, there is an en suite bathroom for each of the three bedrooms and access to the rear lane leads to a double garage.

“And the open layout opens onto a north-facing courtyard,” Avati said.

The house is also a 150-metre walk from Preston Market, and a growing list of the world’s coolest places is slowly rolling through Melbourne’s northern suburbs along High St in Northcote and Thornbury. The comedian said Preston was on track to become the next on the list to gain international attention for its atmosphere.

Mark Verrocchi of Nelson Alexander is handling the sale and said a mix of downsizers and younger couples had shown interest in the property.

Everyone appreciated its location near Preston Market, but the extra attention to detail, from en suite bathrooms for each bedroom to the low-maintenance design of the house and gardens, had also increased its popularity.

It includes a bedroom on the ground floor with an en suite bathroom, and two more with en suite bathrooms on the top floor.

The main living area is located at the rear of the ground floor and opens onto the courtyard garden and double garage.

The three-bedroom townhouse at 52B Beauchamp St, Preston, will be auctioned on December 13 at 10am.
