The Avalanche has one of the most talented line-ups in what already looks like an ultra-dale central division. With a goal revenue in the rearview mirror, it is now time to take a look at the defensive corps to see how the avalanche steps compared to the competition.
Top coupling
Where else can you start, but with the defensive winner of Norris Trophy? Cale Makar is the best defender in the competition and only Quinn Hughes can even possibly challenge that crown. Makar comes from a career-high 92-point season and only the second 30-goal season by a defender since 1992-93 (Mike Green is the other).
Next to him is the 31-year-old Devon Tools, the rugged two-way defender who is perhaps the most underrated Blueliner in the competition. TOWS is a solid 45-50-point defender able to play closing minutes, while Makar can roam freely.
This coupling will eat a ton of minutes (24 minutes or more per night) and play high -quality play all the time. Makar is like an elite forward at the back, giving the avalanche a dynamic aspect that can replicate virtually no other team. That is the kind of benefit that a real competition is benefiting from.
Second coupling
The second combination of the avalanche is perhaps the most interesting. If it is able to achieve his potential, it has the potential to offer physicality, puck-moving capacity and eating almost 20 minutes a night. But can the duo stay on the ice?

Samuel Girard is substandard (5-foot-10, 170 pounds) according to NHL standards, but can move the puck well. Injuries have been a normal part of his career, although he played 73 games or more in two of the last three seasons. Although on average he does not produce more than 35 points per season, he can eat more than 20 minutes per night in a responsible manner.
Playing next to him is Josh Manson. When healthy, the 6-foot-3, 215 ponder is exactly what the top four needs. He can still move well, even at the age of 33 and has a physical side for him who does not have the rest of the group. That said, he tackled major injuries in two of the last three seasons and accepted in 48 games in 2024-25. If he can stay on the ice regularly, Manson can be the tough, physical defender who requires a solid second pairs.
Third coupling
The third combination is pretty interesting on paper. On the one hand there is the 27-year-old travel man Sam Malinski. Malinski finally cracked an NHL line-up for the first time in 2024-25 full-time, so that quietly solid game was brought to the bottom clutch. He is what he is, and 15 minutes of sheltered ice age works well for him.
On the other hand, the 40-year-old veteran is Brent Burns. After three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes wants to make burns A final cup in Colorado. He is not the burns of even a handful of seasons ago, but still able to chip at a high level.
This can be a perfect combination on paper. Malinski can play sheltered minutes and concentrate on the base, while Burns can offer a steady veteran presence and perhaps can again get double digits in goals by playing third-party matchups instead of making more difficult top-four fights. It also hurts that the avalanche adds a proven raw material to the lower pair.
A potential elite unit
The avalanche needs a little help in the form of Girard and Manson who stay in the line -up, but this looks like a fantastic group on paper. Makar and Tersws are the cream of the crop, the first to challenge more than probably for another Norris trophy and even the heart trophy as a League MVP.
Burns and Malinski can be a solid third combination, and the Manson-Girard combination can be the glue that keeps it all together. If they cannot stay healthy, Burns can slide in for one of them to bridge the gap and limit a possible drop-off.
