Coleman Wong on Tuesday became the first man representing Hong Kong in tournament history to win a match at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open when he defeated Mariano Navone 6-3, 7-5.
The 21-year-old had suffered defeat in his previous two appearances at the ATP 250 event but ensured it would be third time lucky. The wildcard, who reached the third round at the US Open in August, meets Gabriel Diallo after the Candian defeated Jesper De Jong 6-4, 7-6(7).
Shang Juncheng eased past Francisco Comesana 6-4, 6-4 to improve to 7-2 on the hard-court event, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The Chinese wildcard was in action for the first time since playing in Shanghai in October and will be hoping to put a difficult injury hit from 2025 behind him in the coming months.
The 20-year-old, who has reached a career-high No. 47 in the PIF ATP Rankings but is currently ranked No. 406, is a two-time semi-finalist in Hong Kong. Shang will play Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.
Defending champion Alexandre Muller maintained his impressive record in Hong Kong with a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Miomir Kecmanovic. The Frenchman won his first ATP Tour title at the 2025 tournament and will play Marcos Giron in the second round. The American overtook Laslo Djere 6-2, 6-0.
Fifth seed Sonego and Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry also advanced. Sonego defeated #NextGenATP Japanese star Rei Sakamoto 6-2, 7-6(4), while Etcheverry defeated Valentin Royer 6-4 7-5. Etcheverry will next face Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 7 player in the PIF ATP rankings.
Botic van de Zandschulp set up a second-round duel with second seed Alexander Bublik. The Dutchman defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 to level the Lexus ATP Head2Head series 2-2.
