United boss Ruben Amorim confirmed his wish to keep the 20-year-old midfielder, although Mainoo from the team was omitted for the first two Premier League matches of the club.
He finally saw action in the second half of United’s 3-2 victory over Burnley last weekend, which marked his first competition performance of the campaign.
As expected, Mainoo was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s English team for the coming World Cup qualifications against Andorra and Serbia.
Instead, he is focused on training on the Carrington -Basis of United, with the aim of reclaiming a place in Amorim’s starting line -up.
Palmer, currently away from the national team of England, dropped a curious comment under the latest message from Mainoo and added fuel to fan theories.
The playmaker of Chelsea wrote: “3 my husband.”
Another striking image in the same message led to a lot of fan speculation.
It showed a scene from the film whiplash, where the protagonist pushes himself to the utmost to reclaim his place in the main sample – a metaphor that many interpreted as Mainoo’s own struggle for recognition.
Chelsea and Manchester United were active trading partners this summer, with the Blues Alejandro Garnacho secured in a £ 40 million deal.
The London Club had also committed Jadon Sancho the previous year, while United Mason Mount transferred from Stamford Bridge in 2023.
According to the Daily Mail, however, Chelsea did not pursue Kobbie Mainoo before the transfer window was closed.
Instead, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton reportedly showed interest in a loan movement for the midfielder of the young England.
Each of those clubs managed to strengthen their midfield options for the deadline – Spurs landed Xavi Simons, Villa brought in Harvey Elliott and Everton completed a deal for Merlin Rohl.
The only signing of Chelsea was Facundo Buonanotte, who came on loan from Brighton.
With Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia and recurring loaner Andrey Santos all available, manager Enzo Maresca seems to be convinced that his current team can wear the team through the season – at least until the January window opens.
