On August 8 in Ellis Park, Jal Racing’s Doncho, trained by Michelle Lovell, set a world record for the fastest 5½-Furlong Turf Sprint, ranging: 59.75 wire for wiring against reimbursement company. Two days later, at the same distance and job, the Mr. Mmmmm of Baron Racing Stables put in the clock: 59.94 to win a fee for trainer Joe Sharp. The two speedsters meet each other on Saturday at Colonial Downs in the $ 150,000 DA Hoss Stakes, one of the six peat strikes on Old Dominion Derby Day.

‘[Mister Mmmmm] Has a lot of speed, “Lovell said.” He ran a few days later and he rather went faster (than Doncho), but then went back. He was just a slap on our world record. We did better, in terms of ending strong, something we worked with him. “

Doncho entered the first quarter: 21.61, the second in: 21.75, and finished the last Furlong and a half in: 16.39. Mr. Mmmmm went: 20.75, then: 21.44, and came home in: 17.75.

“The last sixteenth Doncho went less than six seconds,” said Lovell. “I am just happy that he is back and found life on the turf because I thought he could do well there.”

Doncho is 9-2 on the morning line, while Mr. Mmmmm is 5-1. Hard-hitting witty, winner of the Andy-Gast earlier in the meeting, is 2-1, while Alogon is 5-2 and loses out of the Graded company.

A slightly racet 4-year-old, the success of Doncho came on earlier. After he broke his girl late in his 2-year season, he followed a fourth in the Lafayette in Keeneland and a victory in the 2024 Gold Fever Stakes in Belmont. Lovell returned to 4 and switched him to Graszel in Keeneland, where he ran ninth.

“He lost a shoe back in the first race,” said Lovell. “So it wasn’t great. But Jaime (Torres) said he handled the grass well, starting it in Keeneland.”

Torres, on board for two of Doncho’s four wins, drives from post 4.

Mr. Mmmmm, just shy of $ 500,000 in income, has eight victories – seven sprinting on turf. With eight Mounts Saturday, including all six posts, Kendrick Carmouche takes the call of post 6.

“It will be a good test for (Doncho),” said Lovell, who won the 2021 Da Hoss with Just Might. “We will see if he is gritty when he goes eyeball in eye (with Mr. Mmmmm).”
