Closing: Konate is “too much at the crime scene”

Ibrahima Konate’s carelessness led to another Liverpool collapse, with Arne Slot accurately describing the defender as “a bit too much on the crime scene.”

Konate’s season has been riddled with individual mistakes and he has been eliminated seven times this season, most of that time while Liverpool have been chasing a result.

The Frenchman’s high-profile mistakes have not been enough to keep him out of the starting line-up as there are few options to replace him, a huge regret of the summer.

And in the draw at Leeds, Konate again became a target for the supporters when his reckless slide tackle on Wilfried Gnonto surrendered a comfortable 2-0 lead to a chaotic 3-3 draw.

At his post-match press conference, Slot was asked how concerned he was about Konate’s form.

He said: ‘Unfortunately for him he’s doing a lot of things right but he’s been at the crime scene a bit too much, that’s something I’ve heard people say before in England.

“So that means he has been involved in goals we have conceded, but when you are a central defender, that happens in football.

“Today it was a tackle that came from effort. He tried to do everything he could to block the cross. The ball went out, the player was already going down a bit and then there was contact.”

“That was clear and obvious, that there was contact. The question now is: should VAR have intervened?”

“Many people will say that’s true, but those same people should look at some of the games we’ve played this season where VAR didn’t come in at times like this.”

You can’t argue with VAR intervention and Slot can’t hide from the fact that his player was reckless in his decision to give the Leeds striker the chance to go down under contact.

It was another moment to forget for the out-of-contract Frenchman, who recently saw reports emerging that Real Madrid have now withdrawn from signing him.

Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with an interest, although it was stated that Konate has not yet decided whether he will stay at Anfield or leave as a free agent.

Marc Guehi came close to joining the Premier League champions before a £35million deal fell through on deadline day The Athletics’ David Ornstein reported that ‘any suggestion that moving to Anfield is a formality is wide of the mark.’

The Reds are keeping their cards close to their chest when it comes to a possible January transfer, after which Guehi could speak to clubs outside England about a free transfer.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Man City are seen as admirers, and the England international wants to challenge to win the Champions League.

Guehi has made 22 appearances for Crystal Palace this season, with one goal and four assists.
