“If he is anywhere near his best he has to lead and be hard to beat,” said his trainer Lindsay Harper, who will pilot stablemate Spyglass from barrier four. Both five-year-olds are by champion sire Sweet Lou and are raced by Mick Boots.
Harper’s son Kyle will pilot Chivalry, who has raced 52 times for 12 wins and 16 placings.
Spyglass is a quality performer and winner in 13 of his 34 starts. He will make his first appearance after a six-month absence and impressed when back on the pegs with four horses in a five-horse Indian tailback test over 2150 meters at Byford last Saturday. He was not extended when he narrowly won against Our Sandy Shore.
“I’ll ride with Spyglass to make sure he’s right,” Lindsay Harper said. “But I expect Chivalry to have a better chance of winning. He lacks a bit of top speed, but is a good frontrunner with a lot of depth. Last Friday evening he raced up in class when he pulled the back line and overraced (he finished tenth behind Justcallmemiki over 2536m).
“Four starts ago he led in a 2536m Free-For-All and was narrowly beaten (finishing half a length second behind Brickies Dream after the final quarters of 28.1 sec and 28.2 sec).”
Aiden De Campo has chosen to pilot Magnus Victor (barrier five) over stablemate Rockandrollartist (barrier nine). “Magnus Victor has been the first to go for a while (five weeks) and I am currently struggling to keep him in the right place,” said De Campo. “His work this morning (Tuesday) was a little better.”
The three runners on the back line – Quinton, Hale Saint Louie and Mikis Pride – race sharply and are capable of strong efforts.
Hale Saint Louie was a smart winner over 2130 meters two starts ago and was unlucky last Friday evening when he finished 11th behind The Iron Duke after locking the wheels on the final lap with Maximum Rock on the straight.
“From barrier two on the back line, Hale Saint Louie should be able to cut through very nicely and probably be very close to the leaders before running home strong,” said coach-leader Dylan Egerton-Green. “Last week he locked the wheels at a critical stage. If he hadn’t done that, he would have struggled to the finish.”
