Clacton & Dist: Brotherhood H show their class – Table Tennis England

Division Three of the Clacton League is the strongest it has been for many seasons, with no obvious weak teams, but Brotherhood H appears to be a class above the rest.

This week the Brotherhood trio recorded a convincing 10-0 victory over the old hands of Windsor Magpies. Dan Grindrod (pictured above, photo by Gavin Price), Danny Still and Gary Simpson all took trebles, Still’s 11-5 in the fifth win against John Plummer being the only game to go the distance.

There were mixed fortunes for Walton C, who made up their matches with a win and a defeat.

In their first match, Walton defeated Nomads Leopards 6-4, captain Lynette Sparks led her side with an unbeaten three and, partnering Adrian Sexton, shared an 11-5 in the decisive doubles victory over Dominic Joannou and Anne Bonny. Sexton and Maggie Earle picked up a point each for Walton, while Joannou and Bonny each won two for the Leopards, Bonny’s 11-9 in the decisive win over Sexton, the closest game of the meeting.

But Walton later went down 8-2 to Holland Hurricanes, with Gary Stallwood taking a predictable treble, while John Smith-Daye and Gerry Widnell took two each. Sparks won the two Walton points, while Sexton, who seems to have made a habit of losing games close to five this season, went down 16-14 to Widnell in the decider.

In Division Onethe all-Walton clash between the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams ended completely square. However, Walton A will feel like they may have taken the win, Pete Burrows taking his maximum for Walton B, but only after edging past Derek Willis 3-2 (11-6, 11-7, 11-13, 10-12, 16-14), while it was 11-9 in the decider for Graham Buxton against Paul Meikle. For the ‘A’ team, Willis and Mark Ratcliffe received two each, and Meikle one.

The meeting of the two promoted parties in Division Two saw Brotherhood J win 6-4 against Nomads Tigers, continuing Joe Sherwin’s excellent form with a third maximum of the season. There was one each for Lucy Carvell and Tom Bryden, with Carvell beating Sam Watling 11-7 in the fifth, while Bryden almost grabbed a second point, narrowly trailing Tom Wilkin 13-11 in the fifth. There were two each for the Tigers’ Wilkin and Matt Sage.

Three for John Colvin, and two for Charlie Denholm and Ian Sherwood, saw Lawford complete an 8-2 success against a weakened Windsor Penguins. Kelvin Olano-Harper’s two points for the Penguins included an 11-6 in the fifth win against Denholm.
