After a long and controversial road, the Ministry of Aging officially moves to 14 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan.
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services signed a 20 -year lease for 81,000 square feet with the ownership of Alexander ROVT, Crain’s reported. The deal at the property that is owned by ROVT, an investor who has donated to the campaigns and the legal fund of Mayor Eric Adams, is worth $ 77 million.
In the first five years of the lease, the city of ROVT pays $ 33 per square foot. Every five years the price will escalate per square foot, covered at $ 44 per square foot. It is unclear when the department will move from 2 Lafayette Street for aging.
“I evaluated the deal and it was clear that 14 Wall St. was the best economic deal for the city,” said DCAS commissioner Louis Molina.
The process for securing the lease is ripe for criticism, in particular accusations that city officials sent the movement to an Adams donor. Former DCAS place replacement Commissioner Jesson, who resigned last month, was central to the controversy with lease of the city office. He has been sued for corruption, although 14 Wall Street was not part of the indictment.
Allegedly, Hamilton stepped into the lease -purchasing process to push the deal opposite ROVT, although the 250 Broadway of Amtrust Realty was the best choice for the lease, based on an internal scoring system.
An internal assessment by DCAs – who did not look at Hamilton’s actions – found that the agency followed the correct procedures when evaluating the leasing opportunities. In addition, DCAS claimed that the 250 Broadway lease would have cost a total of $ 16 million extra for taxpayers and said that the department of the outdated officials preferred 14 Wall.
ROVT donated $ 9,200 to the mayor’s campaigns of Adams and Brooklyn Borough and another $ 5,000 for his legal defensive fund. His wife and son also made donations to the mayor.
