World number one Jannik Sinner crushed Felix Auger-Aliassy 6-0 6-2 to cruise in the open semi-final of Cincinnati.
Auger-Aliassime had both won their earlier meetings in 2022, and Sinner seemed to make an exception to this, because he quickly had his record against the Canadian.
The Italian, who has won four Grand Slams since the couple met each other for the last time in a match at this tournament three years ago, took the match of Auger-Aliassy apart when he took the first set in just 27 minutes.
A bewildered Auger-Aliassy served back-to-back double mistakes to admit an opening set in which he only won nine points.
The world number 28 finally came on the scoreboard when a double error in the sinner-then the 23-year-old Wimbledon champion briefly in the first game of the second set in the Gierly-Mode was overtopled the first match of the second set.
That was followed by Auger-Aliassime Holding Serve for the first time to go up 2-0, but the two-game run was as good as he received for the 25-year-old as his opponent swept through the rest of the set.
“I felt that I was returning very well,” Sinner said. “That was my most important point that gave me the confidence to serve well.
“I had a small drop in the second set when he broke me. I am glad I broke him again quite early. I felt that I was carrying out some great tennis.”
Sinner will be confronted next Terence Atmane after the French qualifying match Seventh seed hole Rune surprised with a straight victory.
The 23-year-old beat the Danish world number nine 6-2 6-3.
Left Hander Atmane, who is in 136th place in the world, is the first qualification that Messrs Cincinnati has reached, the last four in 10 years.
“I don’t think words can describe how I feel now,” said Atmane, who this year had won only one of the four matches at Tour level for the Ohio tournament.
“[Reaching the semi-finals] Is also a lot of money for me, so it will be very useful for my career. It means a lot to me. I am very emotional about it. “
