The Mets are barking the wrong tree.
ESPN personality and former WFAN -Gastheer Chris “Mad Dog” Russo went over the celebration after Pete Alonso Die Darryl Strawberry’s Franchise Home Run -Record Tuesday with no. 253 Brak.
“I can’t believe that the problem that people make Pete Alonso is now the franchise record holder for home runs,” said Russo on ESPN’s “First Take” on Wednesday morning.
“Nobody in Metville I know, and I know a lot with -fans, after a piece where they have lost 11 out of 12 and the Phillies have allowed to bury them in NL East. Now we are going to make a lot about Alonso’s Thuis Run?”
Russo continued to criticize Mets -broadcaster Gary Cohen for his turbulent reaction to Alonso’s 253rd career Thuis Run.
“And I love Gary Cohen, but have you heard his call? This is a bit exaggerated,” Russo continued before he was impatient for show producers to play the video.
Cohen gave a double “Outta here” group when Alonso flashed the ball in the opposite way for a home run in the third inning of a 13-5 victory.
“You can’t even tell me what the record of the Thuis Run was before this nonsense,” shouted a furious Russo.
“This is ridiculous, and by the way, if the Mets love Alonso so much, why didn’t they pay it in the low season to cry out loud?”
He added: “254 Homers? That is ridiculously low.”
Alonso signed a two-year contract worth $ 54 million last season, although there is an opt-out after this season, which he will probably exercise after placing strong figures this year.
Even with Tuesday’s victory, the Mets are in a brutal rack that they now have five games behind the Phillies in the NL East and only two games free from a berth after the season.
Alonso hit two home runs on Tuesday to push the new record to 254.
