Chris Paul has officially announced his retirement from the NBA, ending a 21-season career. The announcement came shortly after the Toronto Raptors waived the veteran guard on Friday, clearing the way for him to retire from professional basketball.
Paul had initially hoped to continue playing after the Los Angeles Clippers sent him home in early December, and as recently as November he had stated his intention to retire after the 2025-26 season.
However, circumstances ultimately led to him ending his career earlier than expected. When the Clippers informed him of their decision earlier this year, Paul still hoped to remain with the team and finish the season on the court.
Reflecting on his career, Paul shared an emotional message about his decision to leave the competition.
“This is it! After more than 21 years I’m stepping away from basketball,” Paul wrote. “As I write this, it’s hard to really know what to feel, but for once – most people would be surprised – I don’t have the answer lol! But most of the time I’m filled with so much joy and gratitude! While this chapter of being an ‘NBA player’ is over, the game of basketball will forever be ingrained in the DNA of my life. I’ve been in the NBA for more than half of my life, over a span of three decades. It’s crazy to even say that!! Playing basketball for the living is a I have embraced it all, both the good and the bad. As a lifelong learner, leadership is hard and not for the weak. Some will like you, but many people won’t.
Paul retires as one of the NBA’s 75 Greatest Players, highlighted by four All-NBA First Team selections, five All-NBA Second Team honors and two All-NBA Third Team appearances.
He also won two Olympic gold medals with Team USA and finished as the league’s second MVP in 2008, cementing his legacy as one of the most accomplished point guards in NBA history.
