The Prime Minister Li Qiang of China has announced that construction had begun on what the world’s largest hydroelectric vault will have been, located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau and an estimated $ 170 billion cost, said Xinhua’s official news agency.

The Dam is the most ambitious hydropower project in China since the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze, with operations that are expected somewhere in the 1920s.

The Dam consists of five Cascade watercraft stations and is located in the lower corners of the Yarlung Zangbo. A part of the river falls on a dramatic 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) within a short period of 50 km (31 miles) and offers a huge hydracht potential.

Regional and Environmental Angsts come

India and Bangladesh have expressed all their concern about its possible impact on the millions of people who live downstream, while NGOs have warned the risk to the environment, one of the richest and most diverse on the plateau.

Beijing has said that the Dam, with the capacity to produce 300 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, will help meet the power demand in Tibet and the rest of China without having a major effect on electric water supplies or the environment.

Markets rise on construction optimism

The Chinese CSI Construction & Engineering Index rose to 4% to a highest highest point of seven months. Power Construction Corporation from China and Arcplus Group PLC jumped with their daily limit of 10%.

Wang Zhuo, partner of Shanghai Zhuozhu Investment Management, said that the project investors offered both long -term investment options and a theme for short -term speculation.

“From an investment perspective, adult hydroppy projects offer bond -like dividends,” Wang said.

But he warned that buying speculatively in related shares activated by the announcement would blow up ratings.

The project will benefit the demand for building and building materials such as cement and civil explosives to related companies, said Huatai Securities in a note to customers.

Shares of Beijing-Gente Hunan Wuxin Tunnel Intelligent Equipment CO, which sells tunnel construction equipment, rose by 30%. That is what the shares of Geokang Technologies Co Ltd did, which produces intelligent monitoring terminals.

Cementmaker Xizang Tianlu Co Ltd and Tibet Gaozheng Explosive Co, which makes civil explosive materials, both jumped at their maximum 10%.

“Project of the century,” says China

The Chinese Prime Minister described the Dam as a “project of the century” and said that special emphasis “should be put on ecological preservation to prevent environmental damage,” said Xinhua in his report on Saturday.

China has not estimated the number of jobs that the project will probably create.

Three Gorges vs Yarlung Zangbo: a comparison

The three Gorges -Dam, which lasted almost two decades to complete, generated nearly a million jobs, the state media reported, although at least a similar number of people was displaced by the enormous project.

Authorities did not indicate how many people would be moved by the Yarlung Zangbo project or how this would influence the local ecosystem.

NGOs, including the international campaign for Tibet, say that the Dam will irreversibly harm the Tibetan plateau and that millions of people are confronted downstream with serious disruptions of their livelihood.

Impact on Brahmaputra Flow An important care

The Yarlung Zangbo becomes the Brahmaputra river while leaving Tibet and flows to the south to the Indian States Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and finally to Bangladesh.

China has already started generating hydropower on the upper reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo, which flows from the west to eastern Tibet.
