Chelsea’s mentality thrills Rosenior in FA Cup win over Hull – Soccer News

Liam Rosenior was delighted with the mentality and attitude his Chelsea showed in their FA Cup fourth round victory over Hull City on Friday.

Rosenior watched as the Blues won 4-0 at the MKM Stadium, with Pedro Neto’s first senior hat-trick helping the visitors to a comfortable win.

Indeed, Neto’s treble was the first by a Chelsea player in an FA Cup tie since Tammy Abraham against Luton Town in January 2021, but Rosenior was keen to praise the team as a whole rather than individuals.

Chelsea finished the match with an expected goals total (xG) of 1.68 from 13 shots to Hull’s 0.9 from their 10 attempts, and they could have won by a better scoreline.

Nevertheless, they achieved another victory under Rosenior. Since replacing Enzo Maresca, the Blues have won the most games of any side in Europe’s top five in all competitions (eight in 11 games).

“I was very happy with the players’ effort and attitude in the first half. It was a difficult match. All credit to Hull, they are flying high in the Championship,” Rosenior said.

“I really hope they make it to the Premier League this year, but because of our attitude and application to the game, the quality is always there, that’s what gave us the platform tonight.

“We had ninety good minutes. Of course you want every minute of every match to be perfect.”

“There are many things we can improve, but in terms of our start together I am happy with it. Pedro Neto has been excellent, he works so hard and he has so much quality.

“I’m very happy to see him get the goals he scored today. Everyone has worked very, very hard for each other.”

“The most pleasant aspect was the mentality. They were an asset to the club. It was a very strong performance in terms of the mental application you need to be successful.”

Estevao was also on target for Chelsea. He has now scored seven goals in all competitions this season – the most by a teenager for the club in a season in the Premier League era.

Furthermore, only Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, 15, has scored more goals for a top five European club as an 18-year-old in all competitions this season than Chelsea’s rising star.

However, the day belonged to Neto, who enjoyed another unforgettable day.

His first five Chelsea goals were scored at Stamford Bridge – since then only one of his fourteen goals has been scored at home (ten away, three neutral matches).

The Portugal international put the Blues under control six minutes after the restart, with his teasing corner floating all the way past Hull goalkeeper Dillon Phillips and into the net.

“Normally the ball should go there. We started celebrating. I thought Jorrel Hato had touched it, but he said no, it’s your goal,” Neto said of his second goal of the match.

The result also ensured that Chelsea have now won their last 18 FA Cup matches against lower division sides by an aggregate score of 58-11.

However, with a game against Burnley next for the Blues and the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League, Neto urged his team to remain focused.

“Above all, I’m happy to move on to the next round. We have to keep winning, but first we have to keep improving,” Neto added.
