Chelsea want to sign Lazio centre-back Mario Gila next year

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has been ruled out for the next few months after suffering an ACL injury in August, while a few other centre-backs at the club have also had their fair share of injuries, prompting the club to sign a substitute next year.

Football Insider reported this that the Blues are interested in signing Lazio star Mario Gila in January, and with his contract expiring in June next year, there is a possibility the £26 million star in a cheap deal.

Real Madrid are entitled to a first refusal for academy graduate Gila, and with both Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba likely to leave the club at the end of the season, they could thwart Chelsea’s attempts to secure the Spaniard’s move.

Gila is a great signing for Chelsea

If Real Madrid decide not to block Chelsea’s path for Mario Gila, the Londoners will be significantly strengthened by his signing, especially considering they won’t have to spend a significant amount of money to acquire him.

The 25-year-old is brilliant with the ball at his feet and can dictate play from the back with very accurate progressive passing. Defensively, his aerial strength, tackling and positioning make him a top defender in Serie A.

Brighton & Hove Albion are also looking into signing the player, but given Chelsea’s participation in the Champions League and the prospect of playing regularly at Stamford Bridge, Gila may prefer a move to London.

It will be interesting to see if the board are willing to spend on Gila in January itself, or if Enzo Maresca is urged to wait to sign until next summer, when he would be a free agent.
