Chelsea have had some bright moments this season, but unexpected forms, such as their ongoing four-match winless run, have meant they are nowhere close to challenging Arsenal in the Premier League and need more depth and quality in the squad.
The board’s recent investments, especially in the attacking department, haven’t really paid off, so they could consider making a few more additions next year and it’s starting to look like they could turn to a rival to strengthen their ranks.
According to TEAMtalkChelsea are ‘watching with interest’ over Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri. After a promising end to last season, his role under Mikel Arteta has been curtailed this time around, with just 446 minutes under the teenager’s belt.
Nwaneri is an exciting attacking midfielder, who has also been deployed on the right flank in recent months, so his versatility combined with sky-high potential will certainly have appealed to Chelsea. The player is valued at £35 million on Transfermarkt.
Chelsea may not get their man
Ethan Nwaneri is a solid player. The 18-year-old is one of the best homegrown players Arsenal have produced in recent years, but with a reduced role in recent months his frustration comes as no surprise.
Bukayo Saka’s return to full fitness, combined with the signings of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke in the summer, has meant that Nwaneri’s role in the squad has been curtailed and with Kai Havertz also set to return to action soon, things are not looking rosy.
However, as he looks to get back on his feet, it would be a very big surprise if he joins Chelsea, where the competition for places, especially on the wings, is fiercer than anywhere else, with their number 10 role belonging to Cole Palmer.
It won’t be a surprise if Arsenal are willing to offload Nwaneri to aid his development, possibly as early as the January transfer window, but in all likelihood they are keen to have him out on loan and not lose him permanently.
