Chelsea are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Independiente del Valle star Patrik Mercado, according to Spanish newspaper IF.
After coming through the Ecuadorian side’s youth system, the 22-year-old made his first-team debut in 2022. However, he initially struggled to find regular playing time before establishing himself as a key starter last season.

In 48 games in all competitions last year, Mercado scored seven goals and registered 11 assists. He even helped his side win the Serie A title.
After showing glimpses of his qualities at Estadio Banco De Guayaquil, he has secured his place in the Ecuadorian squad and is likely to be part of next summer’s World Cup squad.
Now, IF (via TEAMtalk) report that Chelsea, impressed by Mercado’s recent standout performances, have expressed an interest in signing him.
The west London club have been closely monitoring his development ahead of his potential move in the upcoming summer transfer window.
With the player’s existing contract set to expire at the end of next year, Independiente de Valle may be open to cashing in on him this year to avoid losing him for free.
Market to Chelsea
However, the purchase of the South American will not be easy for Chelsea as AFC Bournemouth, Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion are also interested in him.
Furthermore, Sevilla are in the race and have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign him. However, they couldn’t register it, so the deal ultimately fell through. The club now plans to complete the transfer this off-season.
Mercado is a naturally creative midfielder, but is also comfortable in the box-to-box role. He is technically sound, can create opportunities for fellow attackers and is also efficient in finishing his chances.
The 22-year-old is a talented player and has great potential. So he could be a smart signing for Chelsea if they were to buy him.
However, it will be interesting to see whether Liam Rosenior’s side will ultimately make a concrete move to secure Mercado’s service before next season.
Meanwhile, after a disappointing draw against Burnley, Chelsea face leaders Arsenal in the Premier League next weekend.
