Chelsea are considering a bargain for Barcelona defender Eric Garcia in January

Chelsea are looking to sign a centre-back in January as a solution to their injuries at the back. The Blues were heavily focused on rebuilding their attacking department in the summer, which meant several issues in other positions went unanswered.

According to Graeme Bailey (via TBR Football)Chelsea are now looking to sign Eric Garcia as Barcelona’s centre-back for the winter, and hope to complete a deal for the Spain international for a lower transfer fee.

His contract with Barcelona expires in June next year and with no major moves on his extension from the club’s side, they may be open to cashing in on him mid-season to avoid the risk of losing him as a free agent in the summer.

Eric Garcia has played in all of Barcelona’s games in all competitions this season, so he is an important part of Hansi Flick’s plans, but there is not much the coach can do if the board decides to sell the player.

Chelsea would be boosted by the purchase of Garcia

If Chelsea sign Eric Garcia this winter, they will gain reinforcement with a quality addition at the back and someone who will also perfectly complement Enzo Maresca’s tactical setup at the club.

The 24-year-old plays the ball excellently from the back, especially under pressure, can hold the defensive line and can even play in multiple positions at the back, making him an all-round option for his managers.

Eric Garcia, formerly of Manchester City, has a Premier League title among a number of other pieces of silverware to his name, and despite his young age, he has reasonable experience at the top level.

Garcia does valued at £22 million on Transfermarktbut due to his contractual situation at Barcelona and La Liga’s financial problems, it is highly likely that Chelsea can get a deal over the line for a lower fee.
