Utrecht, January 28, 2026 – More than a quarter of Dutch people have received or received a donation in the past 2 years*. For example, for a renovation, wedding or to pay off a student loan. If you received a gift in 2025, you may have to file a gift tax return before March 1, 2026. Are you curious whether this also applies to you? And how much gift tax you might have to pay? Then read on to find out how.

Each year you may receive a donation up to a certain amount without having to pay tax on it. In 2025, you or your partner could receive €6,713 tax-free from your parents. This also applies to foster or stepchildren. You were allowed to receive €2,690 tax-free from other people in 2025. Such as from your grandmother or grandfather, your uncle or aunt, or even your neighbor across the street. You have to pay gift tax on everything you receive above that. And therefore also file a gift tax return.

But beware, there are more rules and exceptions. This way, you or your partner may receive a higher amount tax-free from your parents once. The condition is that you or your partner are between 18 and 40 years old. You do have to file a gift tax return.

And also good to know: do your parents want to pay the gift tax for you? The tax authorities then add this to the donation and the gift tax is therefore also higher.
