Always report changes in your personal situation
Utrecht, December 22, 2025 – From 1 January, slightly different rules will apply for rent allowance, healthcare allowance, childcare allowance and child-related budget. In 2026, more people will be entitled to housing allowance. And the childcare allowance will increase for many parents. Everyone who already receives allowances received a letter in December stating how much allowance they will receive as an advance in 2026. The Benefits Department will let you know: will anything change in your personal situation? Then pass this on. Are you not yet receiving any allowances? Make a test calculation via toeslagen.nl/changes2026 to see if you are entitled to it now. You can also read all the conditions there.
Benefits help you pay part of your health insurance, rent, childcare or childcare costs. Whether and how much allowance you can receive depends on your personal situation. Due to the adjusted rules, the allowance you can receive in 2026 may also change.
Check. Adjust. And on.
Have you received a letter stating how much allowance you can receive as an advance? Then it is good to know that this amount is based on the data currently known to the Benefits Department. Is something changing in your life? For example, does your child go to daycare more often or does your income change? Then it is important that you report these changes via My Allowances on toeslagen.nl or the Toeslagen app. This reduces the chance that you will receive too much or too little allowance.
Are you not yet receiving an allowance?
Maybe you will be entitled to it in 2026. Read all the conditions and make a test calculation via toeslagen.nl/changes2026. Indicate for which surcharge you would like to make a test calculation. Are you entitled to an allowance and are you not yet receiving it? Then apply for the allowance via My Allowances on toeslagen.nl. You must apply for each allowance separately. So, for example, are you entitled to housing allowance and healthcare allowance? Then you apply for both allowances separately.
More information about the changes and all conditions can be found here toeslagen.nl/changes2026
Below you will find the most important changes for each surcharge:
In 2026, it will no longer matter how high your rent is in order to receive housing allowance. Service costs will also no longer count in 2026. Only the basic rent counts for the rental allowance. For everyone aged 21 and over, the Benefits Department calculates rental allowance up to a maximum rent of € 932.93. Is your rent higher than €932.93? Then you can receive housing allowance, but not on the part of the rent above € 932.93. For young people up to the age of 21, the Allowance Service calculates the housing allowance up to a maximum rent of € 498.20. Is your rent higher? Then you can receive housing allowance, but not on the part of the rent above € 498.20. If more people live in one household, the Allowance Service will look at the age of the oldest resident.
In 2026, some people will receive slightly less healthcare allowance, while others will receive more. Are you single? Then your income in 2026 may not exceed € 40,857. There is a maximum of € 146,011 for your assets. Depending on your income, you can receive a maximum of € 129 healthcare allowance each month. Do you have an allowance partner? Then your joint income may not exceed €51,142. There is a maximum of € 184,633 for your assets. Depending on your income, you can receive a maximum of € 246 healthcare allowance every month. This amount is for you and your allowance partner together.
Changes kchildcare allowance
The childcare allowance will increase for many parents. Do you have a joint income of up to €56,412? Then you will be reimbursed 96% of the maximum hourly price. Do you have a higher joint income than €56,412? You will then also be reimbursed a higher percentage of the maximum hourly price than in 2025. Exactly how much you can receive depends on your (joint) income, how many of your children go to daycare and how often, and the hourly price. Please note: if the hourly price of your childcare is less than the maximum hourly price, your childcare allowance will be calculated with that lower hourly price. If you pay more than the maximum hourly price, the Benefits Department will calculate your surcharge using the maximum hourly price. The maximum hourly prices in 2026 are: €11.23 (day care), €9.98 (out-of-school care), €8.49 (childcare).
Changes kincluding budget
The child budget increases slightly for single parents with an income of up to € 29,736. Couples with an income of up to €39,141 can also receive a higher child-related budget. Do you have a higher income than this? Then you can receive a slightly less child-related budget in 2026.
