- OpenAI has added a new feature to ChatGPT that allows users to pause the AI mid-response
- Users can write context or corrections to a prompt without restarting, using the “Update” button.
- The feature is mainly intended for those who use GPT-5 Pro or Deep Research
Accidentally sending a prompt to ChatGPT only to realize you forgot to include a detail or copied the wrong phrase from a website is common enough. Still, it’s very inconvenient if you’re using the GPT-5 Pro model or ChatGPT’s Deep Research feature because it takes much longer to answer them and you may have to send a limited number of prompts.
That should be less of an issue now that OpenAI allows ChatGPT users to pause the chatbot’s mid-response. During the minutes the AI is gathering an answer, you can add new information and redirect the reasoning without having to start over. It’s a way to direct the conversation in real time.
While the AI thinks about how to answer your question, you can click “Update” in the sidebar and add new context or clarifications. Then you’ll see how the AI immediately adjusts what it’s going to say.
No need to restart. You can easily change ChatGPT’s mind while the program is still writing a response.
You can now pause long-running queries and add new context without restarting or losing progress. This is especially useful for refining deep research or GPT-5 Pro queries, as the model will adapt its response to your new requirements. Practically speaking, the ability to edit mid-response can save a lot of time for researchers and analysts who use ChatGPT for deep, multi-step queries. Imagine someone writing a data analysis report and halfway through realizing that one key source is outdated.
Before this update, they had to stop the model, rewrite their query, and redo the whole process. Now they can just say “replace 2022 with 2024 data” and see the text update accordingly.
That’s a small miracle for anyone who’s ever sat through a long, overconfident AI explanation, waiting for the model to finish so he or she can correct a wrong premise at the outset. For a system built on predictive text, this means a shift from simple back-and-forth messages to a more interactive format.
Real-time AI adjustments
Reducing the time wasted due to errors in a prompt or the AI’s understanding of them is certainly something ChatGPT users will enjoy. The update also continues ChatGPT’s gradual evolution into a more adaptive service.
Since GPT‑4, users can provide follow-up instructions, but the flow is always alternating. The continuous, overlapping feedback loop is more useful because you no longer have to wait for your turn to speak. The AI listens while it writes.
In a way, OpenAI ChatGPT brings a sense of humility to conversations. Previous models were known for continuing even when they misinterpreted a question or misunderstood the context. The update obviously doesn’t make the AI self-aware, but it does allow it to correct itself in a way that’s closer to actually working with a person.
