Tiger Woods, except for unforeseen development, will not be on Ryder Cup this year this year.
His son, however, tried to be on the host course.
Charlie Woods played this week’s junior PGA championships at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in Indiana and was bound for the second place of the last round of Friday – and a top two finish would secure a place in the American team for the Junior Ryder Cup, to play on 23 and 24 September in Bethpage BLack. Woods had opened the Junior PGA with a one-under 70 on Tuesday and then made a move with 66s on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Friday, however, the 16-year-old was undone by Three Bogeys and a double bogey on the way to a three-over 74 and a draw for the ninth. Woods ended with a total of 276, that was 10 shots behind winner Lunden Esterline and four shots behind the second Giuseppe Puebla and Tyler Mawhinney. (Puebla earned the Junior Ryder Cup place.)
Woods was encouraged in anticipation of Friday. During both the second and the third round he turned nine birdies.
“My round was pretty up and down, and it gave me a heart attack,” Woods told the Lafayette Courier and Journal. “But Nine Birdies is pretty good. A few three putts I made a few mistakes today, but in general pretty solid round. Pretty good position that will go into tomorrow.”

“With my new responsibilities for the tour and time obligations involved, I felt that I could not bind the time to Team USA and the players who were needed as the leader,” Woods said in a statement released last July by the PGA of America. “That does not mean that I would not want to apply for a team in the future. If and when I think it is the right time, I will put my hat in the ring for this committee to decide.”
On the girls’ side of the Junior PGA event, Asterisk Talley finished first and Zoe Cusack was the second.
